I have an old 1.6g Samsung hdd, noisy as hell, but has served me well over the years. Lately I have been using it as a portable (at first I'd just move it from pc to pc, later I got a portable usb2 to ide bridge). Just the other day, I power it up and it makes a couple of clicking noises and it powers itself down. Oops, I guess I've been knocking it around a little too much. So here I at last night. I figure the drive is dead, so I open it up (I am the curious sort), and while admiring the mirrored finish on the platters, wonder what it looks and sounds like now that the cover is off. I hook it up, and power it on. And it works. It spins up, initialises, and waits there, ready for data. (sounds like a mini-boeing airplane btw :) ) So I closed it up and am now wondering, how much more life is in this thing, especially now that I have opened it up. :~ Maybe do one of those mods where I put in a clear perspex cover or something. :)

JohnJ wrote: its time for a replacement yeah, well, its been replaced (well superceded) twice already. It was only 1.6g. I'm surprised it lasted this long considering the treatment it was getting. I have considered getting another larger drive to put into the usb enclosure, but I might just spring for another larger usb flash keychain drive (I have a 128mb one at the moment)

Just for fun I ran a Quantum Bigfoot 5.25 inch 6Gig HD with the cover off. I had it sitting on a shelf on the end of a long IDE cable. It ran for 6 months just fine until I dropped a book on it from the shelf above :omg: Talk about a head crash. The platters never semed to collect dust because the spun so fast.

Since it has now been opened it is at risk. All it takes is one speck of dust to get caught between a head and a platter and the oxide there will be torn off and the data on that cylinder will be lost. Good luck with it. :) The Ten Commandments For C Programmers
