Detecting spyware - what do I look for?

Hi there: I am interested in getting some information on what to look for when detecting spyware and keystroke loggers. Is it keyboard hooks, and interprocess message intercepts? And how do I determine if they are occuring? I have seen many applications out there but I am not sure if I trust some of them any more than I trust the original spyware. Is there a quick do-it-yourself solution? J.
