Call me ignorant, but I find it really hard to believe that such a large geographical area was allowed to be affected. I understand how the overloaded systems would have automatically shut down, but it seems preposterous that they did so in such an unintelligent manner. I still blame some Unix Hacker. There is one thing I don't understand: The city of Gatineau (province of Québec) was unaffected by the blackout and is located 100 feet from Ottawa. There should be some light ! -------- "I get to go to lots of overseas places, like Canada." - Britney Spears, Pop Singer

It's called complaceny, i.e. our system will never fail so why should we have any, or check, our contingency plans? Hopefully I can chat to a friend about this tonight, his firm will have made millions from this, his speciality is high voltage power transmission.

Different grid, and they also had WORKING safety systems to isolate themselves from this problem. After a while, Manitoba, Quebec and the Maritimes did start safely sending all the power they could to Ontario and US. I really feel sorry for the poor person who was stuck alone in an elevator for 19 hrs. X| On the other hand, I guarantee birthrates will skyrocket in 9 months, like in '65, '77.:-O
