I mentioned a while ago I mentioned I had a 30 gig iPod that now accompanies me on my commute and in the office. Well I was looking for some new earphones... the Apple ones are pretty naff. I also decided I wanted some that would isolate me a bit from the surrounding noise of the Tube on the way in to Leicester Square. Well, I came across these bad boys: http://www.etymotic.com/musicians/er4more.html[^] They sit in your ear canal, and are effectively foam ear protectors with a tube in the middle for the sound to travel through. They're awesome, they truly block out external noise, well not all but enough to listen to whatever you want without having to use deafening volumes. If anyone is looking for a portable combo, I'd highly recommend the iPod with the Etymotic ER4-Ps.. that's what I use and I'm loving every minute of it. The quality of the sound from the earphones is astounding! Incidentally, if I've swayed anyone in the UK to buy some, I'd recommend www.stoneaudio.co.uk[^]. -- Paul "Put the key of despair into the lock of apathy. Those do look pretty fantastic - finally a way of blocking out noise without turning the volume up to instant headache level

And if your wallet's not as full, I would recommend these[^]. I've got a pair of the previous model (MDR-EX70) and they're great - noise reducing, good sound (IMO) and only £25! You can even get the new ones in white to match the iPod... Stuart Dootson 'Java, Basic, who cares - it's all a bunch of tree-hugging hippy cr*p'

Hang on, let me get this right. You paid $330 for a pair of earphones? Let's hope you don't lose them on the tube! John[^]

I'll second that - I've used my Sony's for a couple of years and they've been fantastic. Cheers, Paul

They really are incredible. I figured that since I use the iPod for over 8 hours a day now (about 1 commuting to and from work, the rest in the office throughout the day) I may as well get something that I'm going to enjoy. On complex recordings they really, really shine... you can hear the contact of the hammers in pianos on the strings. Whether others will enjoy it to the same value is not something I can say, but if anyone loves music and is in a similar predicament I would thoroughly recommend them. At least I didn't go with my other choice, Shure make some which include 2 drivers! They're about £399, but sell in the US for about $450. Even I thought they were perhaps a little more than I was willing to pay :) -- Paul "Put the key of despair into the lock of apathy. I had a pair of Sony in-ear 'phones for six or seven years (hey, I lost count ;)) but eventually pulled the longer wire (the one that goes from the joint to the right ear, on this pair) a bit too hard and they went monaural. Normally earphones last about two or three months, so several years was quite surprising. Trying to find anything that suits is proving quite tricky! Unfortunately I can't find a product code marked on them anywhere. Maybe I'll take Stuart's advice...
