Small business accounting

Anyone know roughly what it will cost to a) speak to an accountant about setting up my small business and b) have said accountant handle my books? Any of you Toronto folks have any local numbers? Or locals to recommend? What about lawyers? I'll need a few contracts drawn up... J

The lawyer is where you going to have to dish up some cash. You're probably talking $500-$1000 per contract. At least you would be if dealing with a lawyer in the States. My code isn't buggy. Those are all fleatures.

I use an accountant for tax preparation, which costs around $300 to $500 a year, depending if I have him file quarterly taxes or not. A bookkeeper is different. Ummm, isn't there some software you can use? In any case, a bookkeeper should be a lot cheaper. As to contracts, go to a bookstore first, or the Internet. There's lots of great boilerplate contracts out there. I don't know about you, but a contract doesn't really guarantee anything--do you have the money to go after someone that violates a contract? Anyways, a lawyer, for an initial visit, is around $150-$250. If you need a specific contract and can't find a boilerplate one, see if you can find a para-legal or somebody cheaper to draw one up. Lastly, here in the US every town/city has a Chamber Of Commerce. Not only do they have good resources, but members give other members discounts and sometimes free services.
