Hi all, I have been having frequent headaches recently, especially after long hours in front of the monitor and I went for a check up at the eye doc. And it seems my eye sight is perfect. But the doc said maybe I can use a 0.5 specs, so that it will enable better viewing, thereby reducing the strain on my eye. She said I need to use it only when I am using computers or while reading books. I chose a frame and have placed the order for the specs. I am going to collect it today afternoon. I am unsure what the specs will do to my looks :-O I am not sure how many of you use specs for this kind of a purpose. I think I will use it for a while and see if its really useful :~ Cheers Smitha You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it true. But the doc said maybe I can use a 0.5 specs, so that it will enable better viewing, thereby reducing the strain on my eye. Been there, done that. I never had the need for glasses, but the headaches at work were too much. The first doctor gave me a very light prescription, with anti-glare coating. That worked for a while, but my eyes were worse for my next checkup. That doctor increased the strength, and eventually I had to start wearing the glasses more often for other things. At work, I started shutting off one set of overhead lights, and I could actually use the computer without glasses for a while. Eventually I got an LCD at home and at work, and I no longer use the glasses, and my eyesight is improving. My conclusions from this experience: Monitor glass is not your friend, it reflects light directly in your eyes, Glasses are not your friend, you begin to rely on them too much, Overhead lights are not your friends, shut them off and put a light off to the side or somewhere where there will be no glare off the monitor, Lower the brightness, make white a bit less extreme, Monitor size is irrelevent, I was using 19-23" monitors, and I am now at 17" LCD's and I can see, Anti-glare coating is good if you get glasses, but try to have NO prescription on the glasses, Doctors need to sit in front of a monitor and actually understand what is happening. Now I can park myself in front of my monitor and still have 20-20 vision:). Good luck with everything, Shawn

I would get a second opinion though Smitha. A lot of optomitrests these days are warning against picking up reading glasses. They say they lead to dependance and eventually you find you need specs 24/7. They recommend you hold off on reading glasses if you don't really need them. If you are getting headaches and your eyesight is perfect then you may want to check your monitor or seating position out. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Miszou wrote: I have read the entire internet. on how boring his day was. I adjusted the refresh rate now. I think I should see my monitor manual and see the best supported rate. The monitor settings [when the "clear unsupported refresh rates" checkbox is checked] lists 85 Hz as the max. value. But I set it now at 75 Hz. Will 85Hz be safe? I run at 1152x864@75hz and it is fine (and believe me, I spend a lot of time behind this blasted device). Give 85hz a bash though, if it can't take it, it will just go black for 10 seconds and then revert to the previous setting. No damage done. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Miszou wrote: I have read the entire internet. on how boring his day was. Crikey! ain't life grand?

So what do you drive the lcd's at ? I am having tired sore eyes after a day in front of the screen. Sony G520 21" 1280 x 1024 * 100 Hz (to avoid beat interference with 50Hz mains lights etc) but I can mostly work with natural lighting only anyway. Why do you think the lcd's are better for your eyes ?

I think I am gonna take your recommendation. I will try changing my seating position. I used the glasses for reading and found it quite irritating. The view without the glasses is quite smooth. And Kannan was saying 0.5 is not a trivial power. Maybe I should improve my seating position and if possible get an anti glare cover for my monitor. Nish has low tastes, it seems. I'm sure they look quite attractive. I wear glasses for distance, but like you, can't read wearing them. It's quite annoying, but my only other option is bifocals which would be really irritating. When I first got glasses they were so mild that I could read with them easily, but as your eyes progress down the nearsighted or farsighted path they are no longer so flexible. If reading without them is less strain on your eyes, by all means take them off to read! "Some people are like Slinkies... not really good for anything,
