I dunno, what's the time? :-D
Despite the high cost of living, it remains popular. Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

Thanks for the dictionary! With all these variations, it's hard for a poor French to get all the jokes around there :sigh:

It must be a very different life there than in Africa. Less lions, for example. Are there still "cultural" connections between Holland and SA, as there are between France and Quebec?

KaЯl wrote: It must be a very different life there than in Africa It sure is! Apart from the fact that the only lions here are the unfortunate specimens pitifully freezing their collective butts off in zoo's, almost everything about life here is different. The most obvious difference would have to be the climate, I much prefer the hotter days and nicer weather. Some days when I have to cycle to school in the rain I really don't dislike the idea of being back in sunny SA (not that I ever dislike that idea, mind you). On the other hand, certain things here are much better than in SA. Take for example internet access. We lived in (near actually) quite a big city in SA, but the only internet access available was dial-up, and not even 56k at that. Also public transport in SA is as good as nonexistent. There are some busses in town, but generally the crime rate on public transport in SA makes it not worth it. For example, it's also not safe to be out on the streets after dark, because you might get robbed/beaten/etc. I'm painting a pretty black picture of SA in that respect, which might not be all true, as we were perfectly safe/happy in SA while we were there and many of our friends there haven't had any problems. But still, the risk is there. The political situation? Well, I don't think I need to say anything about that- in SA it's a shambles. Just tonight on the news I heard of a case where the vice president (Jacob Zuma I think) was accused of charges of bribery involving purchasing lots of military equipment, like fancy planes/boats etc. After deliberation the government decided to drop charges on the grounds that no bribery was involved, [:suss:] but his financial advisor will still have to face charges. But how is this possible if there was no bribery in the first place? 'nuff said. On the other hand, things aren't rosy in the line of politics here in NL either. So very often it's six of one and half a dozen of the other, I guess it's just which problems you'd prefer to be faced with. KaЯl wrote: Are there still "cultural" connections between Holland and SA, as there are between France and Quebec? I'm not really sure on this one, but I get the impression that this is not the case. For example, the Dutch as a community seem pretty quick to criticize the former Apartheid, but seem to have forgotten that in the 1500-1600s they made their money out of slave trade. Go figure. I think that the answer to that question would be no. The people
