Is LZW patent expired yet...? If not can I use gif's in my app if it's made freely available...? I'm not making money directly from it...? Basically I want to create a thumbnailer for some clients and they requested gif... :) I'm not interested in charging them for it though :) Thanks I'm drinking triples, seeing double and acting single

Try to convince your clients to use PNG. It's intended to be patent-free, and offers significant advantages over GIF. Most non-IE browsers support its advanced features well or flawlessy - IE supports them well enough to be used as a replacement for GIFs. -- Russell Morris "So, broccoli, mother says you're good for me... but I'm afraid I'm no good for you!" - Stewy

They could have made png a success, if they had included GIF "animation". Designing a replacement, and leaving out a major feature. Dumb. I'd rather expect a GIF05 format, allowing true color, than PNG really getting on foot. I see that it has cute technical advantages over GIF, but at the end of the day, it's just pixels.

Take a look at the Mng library. Quote: MNG is a multiple-image member of the PNG (Portable Network Graphics) format family. It can contain animations, slide shows, or complex still frames, comprised of multiple PNG or JNG single-image datastreams.

The LZW patent expired in June 2003 in the United States. However, patents on LZW are still in force in Canada, France, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Japan.
