Concorde's last flight

Meg, I am under the flightpath and the weather is OK at the mo' - it's due in about 30 mins. Some cloud, but nothing to worry about... I heard it go over last night and have to admit I felt quite sad... :(
I've forgotten where you are? They say it should come over Maidstone at 3:30, the cloud isn't too low - so here's hoping :cool:. I had a job near Heathrow once, where the Concorde would take off over us each day during our lunch hour - was great! Sitting outside waiting for it while munching became something of a ritual :).

Apparently Branson wants to buy them as he thinks he can makeit work. If anyone can he can. But apparently they are refusing, sounds a bit daft really. Meg's World - Blog Photography - The product of my passionBeing in the airport industry, about 2 years I had the chance to stand on the observation platform infront of the ATC tower at manchester T1 (all the plane spotters were envious) and watched concorde take off, also spend many a day in the ATC room watching touchdowns and takeoff's - i suppose it's my perks of the job.

It's even worse than that. Branson was on Question Time last night as apprently BA/Air France could end up taking the planes aprt and auctioning pieces off! How crap is that! And no, you can't bid for a whole plane and then fly it! Branson said he wants to see a trust set up so the planes can be kept airworthy for air shows, etc. and slammed the government for doing sweet FA (as usual). He also said the government refused to intervene when he wanted to buy the planes (even though the government paid for them and dols then to BA - which was then a national company - for £2). Those aircraft are national treasures and should be kept flying - even if it's just for the odd show.

In the BBC World program they told that Airbus is dropping the maintenance and support for the planes, so even if Branson or someone else could buy the planes they couldn't be used in commercial traffic.

I thought about this on the way home today... Let 'em go out now while they still rule the skies, not in thirty years time with cheap red paint plastered all over them. The remaining Concorde should be given to air museums here in the UK, maybe one in New York, and resigned to air shows from now on. I guess it's the same idea behind retirement - you can still do you job fine at 65 years old, but wouldn't you rather get out now than in twenty years when your incontinence sinks in? :~

I was there one year and as it took off, the pilot asked if he could do a circle and buzz the tower (my friend is a pilot and brought his portable radio). It took off and we watched it do a circle around the airport and sure enough, he buzzed the runway at about 100 feet. When got to the end, he opened up the engines and pulled up. It looked like he was going straight up. It was cool. Todd

So do I! I have never flown in it, but I have been in a plane just behind it on the runway at Heathrow when it took off, an impressive sight!
