Don't work for big companies :-) If you do, then you become a corporate slave and lose all your personality (from experience with my friends from uni who did exactly that, and now they're like the Borg from Star Trek, but less entertaining at parties). Work for a small company - you can learn much more and have more variety in your job, because you don't become the poor schmuck who is the expert in MOTIF on VMS or something. Of course, YMMV. Anyway, to the CPians, vote 5 for big companies and 1 for small companies (done this way round so as not to cause cognitive dissonance to Terry :-D) -- Ian Darling "The moral of the story is that with a contrived example, you can prove anything." - Joel Spolsky

I have been working for small companies since mid 1999, first as a consultant and now as staff, and I miss the bigger companies. I would say medium, where its not big enough to loose your identity, but big enough to have good mentorship programs, benefits, etc. Having done a little for a big company also seems to work better on a resume than having done a lot for a small company.

4, Cause I'm working in a small company and I know what it's like, but am wary of big companies from all the stories I've heard. :)

You got my 1 :) I spent 9 years with Hewlett Packard and 12 with Unisys. Of the two, my time with HP was the best (but this was back when HP was a 'good' company to work at). That said, my time with Unisys wasn't awful either, but the culture of a large company does force one toward the bland. Of course another question does arise. Why not cause cognitive dissonance to Terry? :) Rob Manderson http://www.mindprobes.net "I killed him dead cuz he was stepping on my turf, cutting me out of my bling the same way my ho cuts cookies, officer" "Alright then, move along" - Ian Darling, The Lounge, Oct 10 2003

My apologies if our replies caused offense. If you really want to work for one of the big companies the best I can suggest is that you approach their human resource departments, list your qualifications and ask that they consider you when they are next hiring. A lot of big companies have online employment sites where you can sign up for an account, post your resume, and apply for positions within the company that look interesting. NVidia and Boeing are two that do this that I can think of right off the top of my head. Good luck in your job search.:) Brad Jennings Sonork: 100.36360 AIM: hongg99
