I bought a new Armia (a Polish band) CD yesterday and I wanted to listen to it on my way home on the train. However, my portable MP3/CD player could now read it, since the CD was copy controlled. Or I should rather say 'copy controlled' - there is no problem to copy such a CD or rip it ('isn't it ironic? don't you think? a little too ironic? and i really do think.'). This is getting more and more frustating - I buy CDs in the stores and I cannot even listen to them. Is this how the music companies want to discourage people from downloading music? Do you know any Web page where I can join a protest against this? (I know it's not gonna do much, but it will help me. :)) "Gods die, when their believers are gone." --from Sandman by Neil Gaiman

It is very ironic indeed. I don't know any web site, but you should return the CD to the store and complain to them. Cheers, Fredrik

Not a bad idea. The CD plays on my home stereo and I like it, so I want to have it, but I will go and talk to them just to see what they'll tell me. "Gods die, when their believers are gone." --from Sandman by Neil Gaiman

If you want to warn other people, add the CD to the unCD Database[^]. And check the database[^] before buying the next CD! (Sorry, I think the site hasn't been translated to english yet :( )

Thanks, but that's not what I meant (I know how to copy a CD like this). I only wanted to express my frustration with the copy protection that makes the CD unplayable, instead of making it uncopiable (am I inventing new words? :)). That's why I'm using this sig (not the dog_spawn, the other one :) )... The music and the game industries will learn the hard way that harassing customers do not decrease piracy, because pirates use cracked versions. Trying to make bits uncopyable is like trying to make water not wet. -- Bruce Schneier By the way, dog_spawn isn't a nickname - it is my name with an underscore instead of a space. -- dog_spawn
