It seems to me that the voting system is being used for the wrong purpose - instead of voting up posts which are interesting, funny and/or well written, even if you disagree with them, peopel vote down what they don't agree with, thus resulting in potentially undesirable group-think and conformism. For example, I frequently disagree with the views of Terry O'Nolley and some of other regular Soapboxers, but I don't vote him down for it! Do we really want that sort of unilateral debate here, so we're no better than that slashdot site? :-) -- Ian Darling "The moral of the story is that with a contrived example, you can prove anything." - Joel Spolsky

I agree with most of what you write and, for the "record", I didn't vote Jonny down. I thought it was mildy humerous.:) Ian Darling wrote: peopel vote down what they don't agree with, thus resulting in potentially undesirable group-think and conformism. That's a bit of a stretch, I have voted people down in the past for innapropriate content in the Lounge (programming questions, violating the little sister rule, etc). I generally, unless I am in a hurry, post my disagreement to another post. The "group-think" can apply to voting up as well. The most recent examples are anti-Bush posts. My biggest peeve is the anonymous poster. If you have a belief and desire to share that belief with others, then you should use you real name. To do otherwise is cowardly, in my book.
