I agree that allowing Microsoft - or anybody - to control what and where items become 'smart' is a very bad idea (especially when all of them link back to MS owned services - though I suspect that was only during the betas). But it'll be a shame if this means you can't add your own smart tags to your web pages - that would have been really useful for things like easier crossreferencing within your own site and providing real-time statistics, etc. I hope the don't can this usage of Smart Tags.
