You know how Bill Gates says that he won't give his children all the money but a mere $1,000,000... well I was thinking... since he has a huge amount of cash why doesn't he start another 'Nobel Prize', it would be called 'The Gates Prize' or something like that... anyways it will be alot more beneficial other than burying it with him.. Actual Linux Penguins were harmed in the creation of this message.

He's like every other rich person with a foundation: they created it just so that they could pay less taxes. No, it's not like it's such a bad thing. But that's the main purpose of foundations: less taxes, especially after death. What made you think of Bill Gate's death? Oh were you using a computer running XP? Or trying to develop a small program with VB.NET? :-D

nssone wrote: But that's the main purpose of foundations: less taxes Not true, at least not always. Foundations are often formed for the purpose of acheiving immortality and establishing a tool for accomplishing goals that might not otherwise be acheived. Most foundations contribute much to human welfare, and are far more efficient in doing so than the government offices the taxes they avoid would have supported. This particular foundation has done far more for society in its short life than all the years' income tax combined since the inception of this unconscionable practice. Better for all to have a few more foundations, and a lot less government. Whatever I may think of Bill Gates' products or business practices, I have nothing but admiration for his philanthropy. Heard in Bullhead City - "You haven't lost your girl -
you've just lost your turn..." [sigh] So true...

I agree with Roger's post on this. Bill Gates has long past the point where money means a lot to him personally. As long as MS survives and he can spend the rest of his life making what he thinks are cool gadgets, he's probably happy on that score. I'm sure making an extra few billion dollars in a year is of far less importance now to him, then to be the man behind the extermination of Malaria and other diseases. Whatever people think of him in future generations he will probably be better remembered for his philanthropy and erradication of diseases for the needy then for DOS, Windows, or Office. Gates's biggest challenge in life will now be to see that his Foundation's money is spent wisely rather than squandered. Regardz Colin J Davies

I have to agree with Roger and Colin here. Foundations like the Gates Foundation do a tremendous amount to help improve things. The fact that the Gates Foundation is doing so much work in the third world just gives me insight into Bill Gates the person. He truely is thinking and acting globally. While I'd like to think that I'd be so noble if I had as much, that's pretty hypothetical. He's actually doing it.

Tell this to this to Rodrigo Baggio. He founded the Committee for Democracy in Information Technology (CDI) on Rio de Janeiro and makes this great work: he takes the poorest children on Rio de Janeiro and teaches them how to use a computer and even how to code. Then them go and get a good job, and help their family to get a better life. See the movie "City of God" ("Cidade de Deus") if you want to know how is to live there as a poor child on Rio de Janeiro's favelas. As soon as the Bill Gates foundation have heard of him and his work, he received US$4.5 million to help him. They also helped him to get the press attention and to date he has received more than US$46 milion. However, it's not really a good deal if you are trying to keep as much of your money as possible because you have to pay between $2 and $4 to the charity (depending on your tax rate) to lower your taxes by $1. The ultrarich are closer to the $2 number. So, for every 1 million dollars BG puts into his charity, he avoids 400-500 thousand dollars in taxes. Not really a money-saving strategy there. ------------------------------------------ Law of Nazi Analogies: As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one. In any debate, Hitler's opinion on the subject is automatically the evil one, so it had better be contrary to the side you're arguing.
