%!&$#@!!! Computer

Last night, I was using my computer and all of a sudden and for no apparent reason, it just shut off. I tried restarting it and it gets power for a second or two but then shuts down again before any of the POST stuff comes up. I built the computer about 3 weeks ago and it has been working great up till last night. I haven't opened it up to look at it yet but it seems like the motherboard shorted out or maybe the power supply is crap. I was wondering if anyone had experienced anything like this before. I wouldn't have thought a motherboard would randomly short out like that once it is up and running (and to answer my girlfriend, no, I didn't spill a soda into my computer). Nathan Addy

It happened to me once, computer without power all of a sudden. Turns out my dog, begging for attention was sitting on the socket adaptor power switch next to me :-O. Anyway, I think it'll be the power supply. There are allot of crap power supplies out there. And if the output of your power supply is just above threshold... ----------------------- New and improved: kwakkelflap.com My second CP article: MAP files[^] "Hey, Eddie, can I pour you a beer?" Seen that on quite a few PCs. It's a knackered processor fan. Buy a new fan and heat sink. Sorry! It's friday afternoon, and after a few pints I seem to have gone dislexic! Your email notification will say it's the psu fan. Hmmmmmm, I meant the processor fan. :-O

I've seen it from just about anything including the CDRom. Try unplugging power to everything but the motherboard. If it won't stay on then try running with a minimum config on the motherboard. Yank everything but the processor and memory and reseat those see if you can get beep codes. If you can, then start putting suff back in until it breaks. -Andy Brummer

Turned out I was running my laptop on batteries, even though I thought it was on AC. Have you checked your batteries? ;P Marc Latest AAL Article My blog Join my forum!

- Make sure you mounted your cpu heatsink correctly and that the fan on it is working. 2) If that's not it, turn the computer on, and then throw it in a tub of water. ------- signature starts "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001 "You won't like me when I'm angry..." - Dr. Bruce Banner Please review the Legal Disclaimer in my bio. ------- signature ends
