My computer is running unstable. Windows hungs, program crashes with the error message "memory could not be read" and blue screens "dumping physical memory". :(( All this started happening about 2 or 3 weeks after I installed a new standard 512 SDRAM memory. I've heard that if the memory isn't of the same make as the one I already have, it can cause applikations to hung and crash. But they are from the same make. I've now removed my possibly broken 512 SDRAM chip and hopefully get to know if it my chip or just Windows who needs a reinstallation... :~ Do you have any suggestions on what could be wrong? Could it be the memory? Rickard Andersson Here is my card, contact me later! UIN: 50302279 Sonork: 37318

It happened to me in the past. The memory bar was wrecked, and insisted on breaking apps randomly, showing BSOD, or even lock at boot-time. All went back to normal when I removed that memory from the board.

And some programmers complain that their users don't read their error messages... Rickard Andersson19 wrote: I've heard that if the memory isn't of the same make as the one I already have, it can cause applikations to hung and crash. But they are from the same make. The brand can cause problems, but different timings from the same brand are likely to cause much more problem. This is why I started buying LOTS of memory (at least, 512MB than I plan to use) when I'm building machines, it's a nightmare find the right memory chips after a year or so... See Daniel's reply. It is not just the brand, but sub types as well. Is it really the same speed, set of chips and circutry. Also depending on your MB it may only accept certian chip speeds in specific sockets. Your manual should give you some info on this. Deleted ConfessionCM 22 Feb '04

Just removing might not fix the problem. It might have screwed up your OS image as well. If it works fine without it, good. Else, format and reinstall after ruling out other posibilites. :((

Without further info, I would recommend that you slow the ram timings down in your bios. That should stabilize things. Of course, I'm assuming that not only are the two sticks of memory from the same manufacturer, but that they are EXACTLY the same in terms of speed, type, etc... I had a problem where Windows would burp on and off with two 512mb sticks of RAM, and if I removed the 2nd stick it ran fine. In order to use the 2nd stick as well, I had to back off 1 tick on the speed in the bios. Good luck. ------- sig starts "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001 "You won't like me when I'm angry..." - Dr. Bruce Banner Please review the Legal Disclaimer in my bio. ------- sig ends
