I have little to no idea about setting up a home network. So far I have managed to install the NIC's and a crossover cable. (only connecting two pc's) i've run the networking wizard on the windows XP computer and then made the floppy disk and ran the wizard oon that on the windows ME system. i've heard thatyoui have to configure the ip address on both systems or something like that but i really have no idea how to do that and what to do next. the pc's need to be able to share files and multiplayer gaming. this is really starting to frustrate so any information on what to do next would be awesome. oh yea and does it matter if the XP machine has a NTFS file system and the ME machine is FAT32?? thanks

But generally speaking, once you have the crossover cable installed, each computer must be a member of the same workgroup and each must have a unique name. In the Networking applet in Control Panel you need to ensure that you have a client, an adapter, and a protocol installed. The adapter is the NIC for the machine, the client varies with the OS version - I believe that the latest is Microsoft Windows Family Client, but I could be confused, not having either one running here to look at. The protocol should be TCP/IP. You also need the Microsoft File and Print Sharing Service installed, and at least one shared folder on each machine. The IP address of each machine must be unique, and should be in a range that is not public - 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 are private addresses that are not routed over the public Internet, for example. The subnet mask for a tiny network should be 255.255.255.0, and the default gateway should be set to the local IP address of the machine that hosts your Internet connection. I'd use the XP machine for that, as the Internet Connection Sharing service in XP is more advanced and reliable. Get it that far, and then try pinging each machine from the other. If there are any errors, post again with the results and we'll work it out. [EDIT] Having slept on it, I'd add that, if you are planning to use the XP Internet Connection Sharing service, configure the XP machine first to establish the connection to your ISP, enable ICS (but skip the firewall), then set TCP/IP in the ME machine to fetch configuration information automatically. You can enable the firewall later after everything else works, if you really want to - I've never heard a single positive comment about it though. The suggestion below to use the 192.168.0.x IP range is also good, as this is what ICS will use anyway. Use it if the automatic settings feature doesn't work. Do it manually ! 1st PC: IP address 192.168.0.1, mask 255.255.255.0 2nd PC: IP address 192.168.0.2, mask 255.255.255.0 Set both to a workgroup - not called WORKGROUP ! Now ping. Oh, and make sure you set up the user lists so there isn't a security issue. Elaine :rose: The tigress is here :-D

As Roger said NO but for the same access rights you need to have the same user name and password on both so the windows authentication is passed. Also the addresses Trollslayer gave is the band that most home networking routers/switches use. At least the linksys, seimens lines that I have helped with both use. So if you ever migrate there will be less setup work.

I seem to remember that there is a 10Mb limit on connections without a powered hub, so you might be running into auto sense problems. If so, try setting the speed of the network card down to 10Mb in the drivers. I haven't used a crossover cable in quite a while so that might have just been a limitation of older hardware. -Andy Brummer

Thanks, that's good to know. It's been way too long since I've dealt with hardware. I'm afraid I'm slipping into the old power luser category. I half remembers enough about old hardware to make me extra dangerous.:-O My goal is to look at code like a chessmaster looks at a chessboard to see positions and possibilites beyond lines and characters.
