Under windows 98 or earlier, a service will not be shown in Taskmanager by default. But under Windows 2000 or Above it is not possible to hide your process from taskmanager. It will be shown. Hi, I never used different desktops, but why not try ... ;) I've paste youre code into a test project and used the CAabout to show in the other desktop. X| could used a warning that everithing would hang. ;P In my case the function SetThreadDesktop(hNewDesktop); fails giving me an error code 170: meaning, requested rescource is busy. When continueing the function SwitchDesktop(hNewDesktop); works switching the desktop. But the main thread is still located running at the original desktop. Sorry :sigh:, don't know anything else to test. Will test some more codito ergo sum

You must do this FIRST, then create your window. If the Read() tells you that it did read 60000 bytes, then that's the truth. Your current problem is to display those bytes. Since most word processing files (all of them) contains a lot of binary information, your buffer is bound to have a lot of '\0'-chars. Just trust nBytesRead.
