When I used to be able to listen to music while at work, it would mainly be classical or something along those lines. Just enough to semi-tune out the chatter of the surrounding cube farm where people think nothing of yelling to someone 60 feet away. Now, all forms of electronics (flash drives, IPods, cell phones...etc) are now prohibited. So, I try to resort to ear plugs, but have to keep pulling them out every time someone walks up...which is about every 10 minutes or so. When talking to management about noise issues, I might as well be addressing a sack of hammers. Bob

If only you could debug a woman...I would do something about their RAM. They just don't seem to forget anything. They'll bring up things that occurred years ago as if it happened yesterday with 100% accurate recall. Kind of funny that the women with the most silicon don't necessarily seem to be prone to this memory problem (from what I've observed). They can't remember what happened yesterday!

Quitting Caffeine and other Healthy Moves...I'm the same way. I used to drink Mt Dew by the railcar, but even after completely giving it up along with most other sugar-based drinks and eats, my weight did not come crashing down at all. Although I was never considered overweight, I carried an extra 20 or so lbs. I work out nearly every day and even though I lost the weight, it wasn't the dramatic crashing-to-earth that others have seen by simply dropping soda. Maybe that has something to do with being over 40 too :^)

Do you use dual Monitor for CodingCurrently, I have dual 18" NEC MultiSync monitors that work great. However, in the next couple of weeks, management has made the decision to 'upgrade' to using only laptops with a 14.1" screen. No second monitors. At home, I have both 22" and 19" (ViewSonic)monitors that I use and am very happy with that arrangement.

Breakfast meetingsIn 2001, I worked on a project where the project manager had twice-daily meetings. The first one was at 7:30am and the second at 4:30pm. It was a pain in the south end of my anatomy! I think the first meeting of the day was to ensure that everyone was in the office (or to take attendance) and the second one was to make sure nobody left early. After nine months of hell, and thanks to the events of 9/11, myself and about 700 other contractors were cut loose on 9/14 even though the project was far from finished (no, we weren't all working the same project). I think they just used the events of the day as an excuse to do some housecleaning. Since this was a major power company, they were also mumbling something about security as the reasons for the massive cut-and-run.

Job Fraud by US IT EmployersOf course, I see a little headline like this show up in Gmail this morning: Hire Programmers Offshore - www.supportresort.net - Quality Indian .NET Programmers From $3.36 per hour. It's easy! That's what American companies want to see. Labor that's almost $3/hr less than the current minimum wage. I mean, how else would the CEO be able to make his yacht payment? ~bob

Headaches...I've had migraines ever since I was in the 3rd grade (I'm 44 now). The biggest trigger for me is fluorescent lighting. It took years before I actually figured out what the problem was. When I was in middle school, I went to a school that had almost no windows so un-natural light was common. I had a headache nearly every day for two years. The high school I went to had a wall of windows to the outside. I only had headaches once in awhile. In college, I spent time in computer labs with no windows and florescent lighting. Headaches returned daily. Now, I'm in an office (no windows) that has both florescent and incandescent lighting. On days that the fluorescents are on... headache ensues. No problems with the incandescent lighting. Of course, the other source of headaches could be the one guy who 'thinks out loud' all day long and narrates his entire day. And of course, his voice could strip plaque off your teeth. The cure for me is usually a couple or three of Excedrin Migraine and several hours in a pitch dark (even the alarm clock digits are too bright)/silent place. Although, there are times that the headache will linger for several days. I also have nausea and dizziness that goes along with those headaches. ~Bob
