There are a limited number of device contexts available at any one time. Every time this executes, you are locking one of these DCs with GetDC() but not releasing it with ReleaseDC(). Eventually, there will be no DCs available, and GetDC() will return NULL. Since you're not doing any error checking, you'll get a NULL-pointer exception while trying to call GetPixel(). Create() method returns a BOOL, If you have specified appropriate parameters, the method does not crash. So better check for your parameters. In case the control is not registered, Create returns a FALSE. In this case, give user the message that control is not registered or installed. @!$h@

MFC does some additional work during its WM_INITDIALOG handler, after your OnInitDialog() returns. It compares the size/position of the dialog before and after calling OnInitDialog(). No, but removing using namespace should cause no problems: simply delete this line (which is a big no-no in header files) and prefix every name belonging in the standard library with std::. It doesn't really work that way. You'll need to create a "Win32 Static Library" ( File | New... in Visual Studio ). Once you've done so, you'll have a library project to work with. When compiled it will build a .lib file. This project is where you'll have to create your dialog and related class. It is possible to move your existing .cpp and .h file for your dialog into a static library such as this, but doing so is a bit of a pain. You will probably have to copy resouce code (from the .rc file) to a .rc file in the static library project. Making all the connections then is a bit tedious. Once you do have this library built, you will have to change the project settings in the main project so that it knows where to find your new library.
