    Have you considered Git?

Can git be integrated easily and will it work with all the file formats? For instance, the user will log in to our system, upload document, and then we can integrate with git to manage and keep track of all the versions of the document uploaded. User can anytime retrieve the old versions. This is a typical scenario we would like to achieve. How is Git performance-wise if the file uploaded is relatively big 500MB+? Thank you.

Hi All, For one of the projects, we need to have the functionality to manage different versions of the documents. I am just wondering if there is an application with which we can integrate instead of re-inventing the wheel. Git like system would be ideal. Thanks

Hi, Can you recommend any good IT asset management web application? At the moment we do not have any formal way to monitor all the equipments purchased like servers, firewall, cables, MacBook, etc. We are looking for an application where we can easily feed in all the equipments we have along with serial number, year they were purchased and if there are any issues and similarly for software licences, to monitor when we need to renew it, log in details of solution providers etc. Thanks

Thanks Mycroft. I think I have come to a conclusion that I am going to stay considering the new challenges they have thrown my way and where I see myself in couple of years time. It will best to broaden my skill set rather than doing what am currently doing that is just programming. Sometimes, it's really good to ask professionals about their view. I know lot of people said to move on but I think it will be better to stay at this point of time. May be I am doing a mistake but time will tell and both ways I will learn something for sure.

ok in continuation to my previous post - previous post[^] In counter offer, they have offered almost same package but along with development, IT management role as well (Tech Manager). So I need to take care of development bit (which is mostly outsourced but there might be new development projects), Filemaker and IT (server etc side). Now my role has always been into programming and this IT management is a new area. If I leave, I will have to payback the 50% MBA fee that my current company sponsored. If I stay, I need to learn all this IT stuff. I am confused now. If I leave, I will be on trial for 3 months and the role is completely programming based. Which role do you think has got more prospects in future? My ultimate goal is to move to management. Thanks for all your suggestions.

The current company is good but the problem is that they have outsourced lot of the development work already. All the apps were already outsourced, but now they have moved all the sites to proprietary CMS due to which few of the colleagues already left. Note that they did not listen to advice of tech dir who got really annoyed and left the company. It was the same reason, I decided to leave but now they are assuring there will be more dev work etc etc.

Is the new job within your comfort zone? How much risk s there in moving?

Well there is always a risk in new job. They are extremely slow in taking decision and offered a role with three months trial. They use trial word over probation which sounded bit negative to start with. Work wise their IT is internal and they have some good projects to count on. But it will be totally programming job whereas if I stay, it will be both managerial and programming which somewhat aligns with my ultimate goal that is to move to management.

Ok here is the old thread to explain the situation I was in - Proprietary CMS[^] As per your suggestions, I decided to move on and finally have an offer as Sr Software Engineer with 35% hike in pay. Now I broke the news to my Manager in current company recently and they are giving me a counter offer with Tech Manager role. I don't know about the package yet. They will let me know soon but I want to now be prepared with my decision. I am about to finish MBA and Tech project manager is the sort of role I would like to move on to eventually. If I stay with this company, lot of the current major software work is outsourced. If I move on then I will be back to solid programming role and not sure how easy it will be to move on to managerial role after 1 year. What do you guys suggest now. (Also note that I have been with the company for over 5 years now.)

I'd love to know how they (your client) decided to go down this path without apparently considering all of the consequences.

They were looking for a quick win solution and obviously ignored what technical guys suggested i.e. to go open source CMS route rather than proprietary solution. Few left the company due to this decision. They were just looking at the outer picture.

This is exactly what happened. Obviously, they haven't reached the blaming stage yet. Few key employees left the company due to this decision.

One of our clients I work for decided to go for proprietary CMS and get rid of the bespoke CMS solution that worked from last 5 years. But they are now struggling as for each small custom change, the company is asking for money and lot of money. Our existing system also talks to various 3rd party API's and also our apps talks to our API etc. So all this communication needs to be moved over to new proprietary CMS solution. This again will cost them bomb. Now in order to save them some money, I am wondering if somehow we get the users data of the proprietary CMS API on a regular basis (If it can be done on real time, it will be even better) and update our DB. If we can do this autonomously, we will not have to move all other 3rd party integration to this new proprietary CMS solution. Note: I am assuming, that this new CMS API will provide access to the user data which we can export or can autonomously upload to our db. It would be good to know your views on this situation. Has anyone of you experienced something similar and does it makes sense or even possible to get the user data in real time. Thanks

Hi, Happy New Year everyone. Ok till last month, I was working in a technical department and all of a sudden our tech director (who was working from last 20 years) resigned. So 20 years of knowledge gone in 3 weeks. Technical team had development, design and IT support guys. Now the management decided instead of hiring a new tech director they made commercial director our head and moved product managers and few marketing guys to our department. Now our department consists of developers, web architect, designers, IT support guys, marketing assistants, product managers, commercial director. Now it's no more just technical team as we have marketing, commercial people in our department. So biggest dilemma facing us at the moment is what we call ourselves as a team. lol. And the first rule is it can't include digital... And that's the end of the rules Any suggestions?? Thanks
