Actually you could volunteer at a soup kitchen, get free meals, and contribute to your community at the same time. I was homeless living on the street in my teens and twenties on and off for a few years. Never filed nor collected welfare or food stamps. I will take unemployment when I've earned it but I draw the line there. But I was able to contribute as a volunteer and be taken care of at the same time. Productive and useful. Plus it helps to be directly involved with many different types of people who struggle today to get a sense of your own situation and how easy you probably really have it. Not to mention losing a bit of self importance that goes along with the self-centric world view that anything belongs to you. This statement is false
