Since your code will not even compile successfully it is little wonder it doesn't work. You are making a static call to a non-static method (phonebook::add_new();), which is invalid. Try looking at your design here, every time you call add_new() you create a new phonebook object but you do not save it anywhere. Consider the contents of a real phonebook, the book contains entries and each entry contains names and numbers. So you need a collection of some sort to hold all your entries; this could be a class or one of the STL types. Perhaps you should try this without using classes as a first attempt to get the concepts right and then convert to classes later. Just say 'NO' to evaluated arguments for diadic functions! Ash

Here are a few ideas for you to make life easier in the future: 1. Don't use global variables when you don't have to. In your case, wall might be acceptable, but dir should not be global. 2. Don't confuse others by writing wall[40][50] and only initialize 15/26. 3. If wall is global, add globals for the wall bounds as well. You don't want to use hard coded values (like 15 and 26) anywhere else but very close to you wall definition. (you can't trust sizeof() operator either the way you have done it) 4. Be consistent in your naming. Don't use indexes a and b in one place, and i and j in another for the same thing. x and y would do just fine. 5. Do not use labels and goto where a simple loop will be enough. Your code will be hard to follow and maintain, even if it's correct. If you need a label, and it will be a long time before you do, give it a meaningful name. 6. Let arrow_keys return its value instead of changing a global variable. It's defined to return an int, but never does. So is also create_wall() by the way. 7. Use constant identifiers instead of hard coded numbers. An enum type is well suited for your direction variable. Again, think of naming. 8. printf("%c", ...)? Have a look at putc(). 9. Indentation looks a bit random, and so does placement of curly brackets. Adopt a consistent style. That said, finding these kinds of bugs is an easy job if you step through the code in a debugger, inspecting indexes into your wall matrix. But clean up your code first. home

Hi Folks, nothing like coming late to the party but as no one has mentioned the way most games are written I thought I'd stick me oar in... In any game the timing is worked into the main dispatch loop. Every cycle around your dispatch loop you grab input, you update the timer, evolve the rest of the system based on how much time has elapsed and then render the game world according to what's happens. It looks something like this: unsigned last_time = get_current_time_in_ms(); while( true ) { /* Record who's got keys pressed, where the mouse is, network stuff */ update\_IO\_state(); /\* Sort out how much time has elapsed and how much time we have to evolve the game state over \*/ unsigned time\_now = get\_current\_time\_in\_ms(); unsigned ms\_this\_loop = time\_now - last\_time; last\_time = time\_now; /\* Change the state of all the game objects \*/ evolve( ms\_this\_loop ); /\* Display the changes \*/ render(); } All the functions take some additional parameters depending on how you store your game state. The key point of this lot is that the game hammers along flat out - the thread this is on will eat a CPU. It churns out frames as often as it can and slows down when there's something system intensive happening. Oh, and if you do your IO on another thread make sure everything is synchronised properly or something weird WILL happen, possibly not on your computer but on your first customer's computer. This question reminds me of one of my articles, Fast Generation of Single-Solution Mazes[^]. Of course, one big difference is that in the article I deal with automatically generated mazes. I think you are wanting to let the user of the program input the maze. Maybe the article can still give you some ideas about certain things, e.g. data structures. Personally, if I needed to allow the user to enter a "wall" character from the console, I would use the | character, perhaps in conjunction with the _ character. Or, you could use menus of some sort. Even in a text-based application, it's possible to have a menu, e.g. 1....File 2....Print 3....About
