I have found the definitive answer! Unfortunately, it's not what I wanted (although it is what I expected). In summary, to quote the article found at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnnetdep/html/redistdeploy.asp, "Applications and controls written for the .NET Framework require the .NET Framework to be installed on the computer where the application or control runs." Oh, well, time to roll back to VB6! And .Net was so.... nice!
