Thanks for the reply. I have ended up using a 'string' class object to read into from cin and getting a const char pointer to it, so that I can get the data into a CString. What a mess, but it works. Thanks. James.

Thanks for the update. That is spot on... The parent does wait with a WaitForMultipleObjects, but, I stupidly I coded the process to use CEvents instead of just using the HANDLE of each thread as the signal. Again. Many thanks.. James.

Without the source and project files it will be tough to help you with this problem. It could be compiler settings on one source module are different than another. It could be something funky being done with a function pointer. It could be some kind of memory corruption. It could be ... ? ...cmk Save the whales - collect the whole set

After much deliberation and study of my code, I have decided to abandon the idea of trying to handle more than 64 events. It is just not possible to integrate multiple threads, each waiting on a set of 64 events. I need to be able to maintain the current application throughput and the overhead would be too much. The list of events that I wait on is not constant and is waited on upto 3000 times per second. The intended user will just have to deal with the limitation. So thats that.

While I can sympathise with your standpoint, I don't know what you referred to and neither the threads and questions. That said, I know from experience that many questions are repeated - displaying the questioner have not even done the basic googling or searching of even CP itself. If the questioner tells up front "I've been trying to find this answer using means x, y and z" it's one thing, but asking a beginners question with an almost obvious proof s/he hasn't even done a google search IMO deserves LARTing. Again, as I don't know what you referred to there might have been something more serious provoking your post, but in my experience post of this kind are provoked by a bystander watching, just for a short while, people who are too lazy to even bother trying to find their own answers before bugging the general public and get flamed for it.

An unnamed Event can be waited on in any thread that belongs to the process it is created in. If the event is inheritable, it can also be waited on in any thread of a child process.
