At my first job (back in the mid 70s), management wanted to create an accounts payable system using an Intel 8080 microprocessor based system using magnetic tape as a random access device (this was before floppy drives and affordable hard drives) - they wanted the system to be able to read a record, rewind back to the start of the record and rewrite the updated information. Their solution to the re-positioning problem was to use really long intra-record gaps :doh: When the programming supervisor told them it wasn't possible, he was "let go" for disagreeing with management :sigh: I stated looking for another job shortly afterwords.
