You could always try the one that Sun provides if you download the right Java bundle. I believe they call it Netbeans. (http://www.netbeans.org/downloads/index.html[^]) I've played with it, but I prefer to use Eclipse myself. Don't let my name fool you. That's my job.

if you want to design graphically rich menus like offce 2007, you are better buying a third party control instead of designing it that's just my opinion. Look up www.divelements.co.uk if you want office 2007 style menus.

Manning have a book called AJAX in Action. I read portions of that, and rolled all my own AJAX code, it's really not hard. IF you're looking for a bunch of cool AJAX controls, that's another question, but if you just want to use AJAX, then there's no reason to need any framework.
