A few of the responses to my earlier post has made me curious. Some of the people that replied seems to think that the CMMI process is a waste of time. While I do agree that it can be poorly implemented, I do not think that the process is bad. The way I understand CMM(I) is that it's tailorable. Essentially you, or your company, tailor the process to best fit your needs. So I'm curious is it CMMI that you do not like or is it your company's implementation of it? nay

Looking for a good writing referenceActually, I'm engoying the paperwork. I can see the benefit to actual design and test. Before my requirements were changing daily (the fires spread with the wind). Now my customer must fill out a Software Change Request :). It can be overdone I agree, but It's ok so far (2 months in). Also, it seems when I don't get to code at work I'm more motivated to work on my code projects (no pun intended) at home. nay

Looking for a good writing referenceI've recently changed jobs from a company where software development was like fighting forest fires to a company that follows CMMI Level 3. Therefor I'm writing more than coding. I have the academic background on processes, lifecycles, etc. I've even taken all the english and technical writing classes in college, but none of those gave me information on how to write well. Sure they teach grammer and how to write a resume, resignation letter, etc, but that is about it. So, I'm asking you folks. Is there a book that you thought really helped you with your writing, technical or otherwise. nay

The Count of Monte Cristo (the book)I've read a few books where the movie was totally different. So I was able to enjoy the story on 2 different levels. That's the kinda of thing I was talking about. nay

The Count of Monte Cristo (the book)Finished reading it finally! What a great book. Now all that is left is to watch the movie this weekend, thought I hear it's drastically different. It did bring one question to mind that I thought one of you may be able to answer. Did people really faint that much in the 1800's? I mean I understand that hono(u)r and politeness ruled high society. But everyone in the book seemed to be fainting every few chapters over anything. "There's a bandit loose, so Countess G faints." Just strange. Oh yeah, no spoilers on the movie please. nay

But I'm a geek...I've got the Wacom Graphire2. I love it. I want the "big one" but it's like $300 USD. I've recently gotten back into drawing. I usually sketch on a large piece of paper 28" x 22" or something. Then I'll trace it with a black pen. Then since i don't have a huge scanner use my roomates Canon digital SLR and take a picture. Then I use the Graphire2 to trace the picture on the computer and do coloring. Really cool. By the way, you may want to goto

Distributing my VC++ appI made sure the app was release mode. Also there are no activex controls in this app. I've followed the directions given in the "Redistributing Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 Applications" article on MSDN, but still no luck. The thing that's really bothering me is that it's not telling me there's a DLL missing. It's just crashing. nay

Distributing my VC++ appI've run into a problem when trying to distribute my application. I'm using a freeware installer called Innno Setup, which is very nice. I have made sure that all of my dlls, config files and even the MSVC redistributable dlls are in the executable directory after install. But still the program dies with a MS VC++ errror. Abnormal program termination. It will not even start. I've gotten it to work on 1 machine which had MSVC7 installed. But machines with MSVC6 installed will not run the program unless it is run from the development environment. The target machines without any development environment throw the same error. So you see, I'm in a bind. Has anyone seen similar behavior? nay

Any linx/PAM security gurus out there?Yeah that didn't work either. I appreciate the reply, though! nay

Any linx/PAM security gurus out there?I've set up a Gentoo Linux box here at the house for a development project. As it's the 8th computer (between my roomate and I) we use NIS for obvious reasons. So here's the question for the PAM security gurus. I can login as an NIS user with SSH. If I login as root I can su to an NIS user. The problem is that no NIS user can login from the console. If this were a server it would be no big deal. But this machine was to be my Linux development workstation. Anyone have any ideas? I've checked /var/log/messages. PAM authenticates NIS users fine for everything except console login. Here's the error. May 2 07:51:30 kawolski login[5481]: FAILED LOGIN 1 FROM /dev/vc/2 FOR nay, Authentication failure nay

To those of you that play the guitar...I like the intro/verse to Tesla's "What you give". It's easier fingerpicked. After the acoustic intro/verse thing it just rocks. I'm a fan of dual guitarist though. nay

ForeclosuresI've been looking for a house about 5 months now. I agree with Richard on forclosures. Some banks will negotiate but most do not. I know most of the forclosures I've looked at weren't even owned by local banks. Most were from New York, I am in Alabama. Some times the previous occupants left the houses ransacked. There was one house where everything had been taken, light fixtures, wall socket covers, light switch covers, carpet, counter tops. Fairly amazing. nay

Acoustic GuitarI have a $160 Alvarez that I love. I've been playing it for about 6 years now and it's great. It's my bang around guitar. I don't care if it get's dinged cause it was cheap. I had an Ovation Applause (~$150 used) but it was a piece of garbage. I can't comment on the Yamaha's I've not experienced them. nay

Michael Moore/black folksJoe Woodbury wrote: I thought that "honor" went to Mississippi. No, Selma and Rosa Parks. Birmingham church bombing, and Gov. Wallace not allowing people of "color" into college. Those are the things that I hear referred to when I hear Alabama in the news. The thing is that the most recent of those happend in the 60's. Makes me cringe. Joe Woodbury wrote: Or was that the most backward? Mississippi has the honor of being one of the least educated states in the US. Then Arkansas. Then Alabama. Our motto is "Hey... at least we're not Mississippi!" nay
