  • Do any of you really use your phone apps?
    R Rich Koshak

I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus but I've used all of these apps for years. Tasker to automate my settings and do things based on where I am or events that happen on my phone (e.g. when car docked, turn on Bluetooth and start up Waze). For me this is THE killer app that will probably forever keep me off of iPhones. Waze to find my way around traffic during my commute. Shortyz crossword puzzles. Bike Computer to track my bike rides. C25K and 100 Pushups to help me get in shape. SleepBot to keep track of my sleeping patterns. Beautiful Widgets/Widget Locker to show me the weather forecast on my lock screen. Evernote for note taking and to keep track of things I sometimes have to look up when I'm at the store like the size of my furnace's air filter, model number for the water filter in the fridge, ink cartridge numbers, etc. Google Voice to get transcripts of my voicemail emailed to me and to avoid having to carry a texting plan. DoubleTwist to play and wirelessly load and sync my music on the phone.

  • artificial inteligence is a myth!!!
    R Rich Koshak

The very existence of free will is still hotly contested in neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, and theology. Even theoretical physicists weight in on the controversy every now and then. If I take your definition of free will, which is not a universally accepted definition, what you are really describing is a system that is non-deterministic. While difficult, it is possible to create programs that are also non-deterministic so I would argue that, by your definition of free will, a program is indeed possible which has free will. A lot or research into emergent behavior has gown down this path. Even if one wanted to just simulate what you call free will, all one would have to do is insert a rule which says that all other rules can be broken (e.g. a statistical weight driven system).

  • Q: Cat5 v WiFi
    R Rich Koshak

I totally agree with the rest, install at least Cat5e, Cat6 is even better. You might consider also running COAX while you are at it. I know it is old but it is still the way cable, satellite, and dish TV providers like to pump the video to your TVs. This is even the case with FIOS. Shortly after I moved into my house I ran two Cat5E and two coax to three walls in each of the three bedrooms and the living room. All the wires converge in a large box in the closet of one of the bedrooms where I have my router, phone break boards, etc. It is just as easy to run two wires as it is to run one so wire more than you think you need. I used one of the Cat5E wires for phone and the other for Ethernet. Because of this, when I had FIOS installed, they were able to use the wires that existed and didn't have to drill new holes through my house. I was also set up to do things like build a HTPC that recorded both off of the cable box as well as from over the air HD using the attic antenna. I was then able to broadcast the HTPC to all the rooms in the house using the now defunct CableCaster devices. I never would have been able to do that sort of thing without running as many wires as I did. I was also able to set up a personal PBX system in the closet that let us send a receive calls both over VOIP and the phone system from any phone in the house. Of course, I did this on an already existing house and it was a huge pain. But there are a few lessons that apply to new construction. - Buy a central box at least one size bigger then you think you will need. - Be very meticulous about labeling everything. Even label the outlets in the rooms (you can always put the label on the underside of the plate if you don't like the looks). - Use real cable labels. I had a standard labeler that I tried to use and many have since fallen off - Run power to the central box and make sure there is room for a power strip - Create a map and tape it to the inside cover of the central box. This is particularly true if you use a distribution board for the Ethernet and phone - Don't forget you don't have to use the Cat5e cables only for Ethernet or phone. I've seen people who have successfully run VGA and speakers off of Cat5. Once the wires are there a whole realm of possibilities open up.

  • To all linux and windows users, please help me choose the better option.
    R Rich Koshak

Every few years I go through the Windows/Linux/Mac question myself. The last time I came up on the side of Windows primarily because I have a good deal of software that I really love that is only available on Windows (OneNote being the most important). You will have to repartition but the Ubuntu installer will do it for you. Once installed, Ubuntu will be able to see your Windows drive, but I don't think Windows will be able to see your Ubuntu drive. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot[^] If dual booting is an issue for you right now, you can always install Linux (or Windows) into a virtual machine. I personally like Virtual Box though have used VMWare and VirtualPC with success. Also, Cygwin can be a happy middle ground. It is basically a Linux stack that runs on Windows. I usually have Cygwin installed where I can on Windows just so I can have a good command line shell.

  • Copyright Help Needed
    R Rich Koshak

"If you use that symbol ... without permission, you are in breach of copyright for using a trademark." This statement is not entirely correct. For one, while both copyright and trademark are related to intellectual property, they are two separate laws for two separate purposes. Copyright provides a limited time monopoly on a creative work. Trademark provides an unlimited monopoly on a term and/or logo in a specific industry. Trademark also requires action on the trademark holder to protect it in order for them to keep the trademark. Trademark does not equal copyright. U.S. trademark law does allow for using someone else's trademark for purposes of commentary or criticism. For example, I'm allowed to use a company's logo in a blog posting talking about that company. The law also allows the use of an existing trademark in a separate industry. For example, someone has used the Caterpillar trademark to make shoes rather than tractors. This is a legal usage as no consumer is going to confuse the shoe maker for the tractor maker. The purpose of trademark law is to protect consumers from being confused. The rule of thumb is the "Moron in a Hurry" test. If a moron in a hurry would not confuse the one company or product for the other then there is no trademark violation. "...all you really have to do is decide that something is a trademark and use it as such..." This is partially true. You can come up with a trademark and mark it with "TM" without registering it; however, that will only provide you with local protection, not national or international protection. It also does not allow you to sue for damages. The best you can do is sue for a cease and desist if someone uses the same name locally. You can only mark a trademark with an R surrounded by the circle if it is a registered trademark. Registering allows you to sue for damages and give you the trademark throughout the U.S. In copyright everything that can be copyrighted is automatically copyrighted whether it is marked as so or not. But, as with trademark, unless the copyright is registered you cannot sue for damages. In this case, if the poster is in a separate industry (e.g. he has software but the other company makes boats) then he is on good legal grounds in the U.S. to keep using the trademark. If they are both software companies then he will probably have to change the name, unless the accusing company has not registered the trademark and isn't in the poster's local area. Finally, even if the poster is on solid legal grounds for conti
