I assume you're using MFC. From a view can can get access to its document via the GetDocument function the wizard generates for you in the view class. Your document class should provide functions to modify the state of the document. The function CDocument::UpdateAllViews on the document is used by the code in the document (or view) to inform all views (the pSender parameter can be used to exclude the sending view if required) of a change in the state of the document. Hello. The problem with detecting serial devices is that the serial port very often can have a random status when the serial port is unconnected. I.e. the DSR signal can be in it's "On"-position even when the serial port isn't even connected! (It depends on the hardware). The only reliable way of detecting if: 1. There *is* a device conncted. 2. The device is powered on. is to catch a transition on one (or more) status lines. An easy way is to ask the device if the PC (Data Terminal) may send data to the DS (Data Set). If the DS raises it's Clear To Send signal, then the PC(DT) may send data to it. You need to declare the actual instance of the variable as well as declaring it in class. Typically this is done in the .cpp for the class: so if the .h had int m_inCoun; the .cpp would have (at the top, before the implementation code) int CYourClassName::m_inCoun = 0;
