  • 2 Day tech challenge for a new Studio.
    R Russel Tiedt

Hey Stranger! It was a day like any other. Code was coded, models were modeled and bugs were… buggy. But we were going strong, making progress on an as yet unannounced game and being generally awesome. ‘Twas in the morning hours of a particularly meme filled day that our lead developer, our fearless leader, hailed us with a challenge. April Fool’s was coming up, we’ve got good a thing going here, why don’t we make a game separate from all our other games to coincide with the silliest day of the year? Madness! Foolishness! Lunacy! None of these were said. Instead, we scoffed, full of bravado, rising to our leader’s challenge like a mermaid from the sea, like a cake in the oven, like Bezos riding his big long rocket to the upper atmosphere. We set to work furiously, gathering our bravest and best to make this little bit of nonsense the best it could possibly be. For two days we labored, working our fingers to the bone, rubbing the letters clean off the keys on our keyboards, all in the name of having fun and making something that would make the masses smile. We poured our love and passion into it and we think it’s something quite silly. But silliness is an essential element to fun and we’re all about that fun. These past two days have been crazy, but we pulled through. Just wait ‘til you see what we do next. For those seeking a slightly more technical breakdown, in the past 48 hours: 330 contributions were made to The Roasting Rock. We distributed 51 internal builds of the game that underwent rapid Quality Assurance - on a CI/CD upped in the same timeframe. This is also our studio’s very first WebGL release - that means no installation - which required significant optimization to be small and fast (33MB) to run directly in a browser. The Roasting Rock has 98 unique jokes - all narrated - and plays off in a top-notch environment with tailor-made music. And the game description: The Roasting Rock is a mini web browser parody fighter that lets you either beat the snot out of a very snarky rock or get clapped by its dad-level sense of humour.
