Hi, if your program's performance isn't what it used to be, then you must have changed something. Assuming all the functions and data structures remained the same, it must be related to compiler/linker settings, e.g. maybe your EXE was and still is optimized, but your new DLL is not? I'd second Joe's reply - why on earth are you using exceptions for this. A serial port being unavailable is by its nature a normal thing. Not _exception_al at all! The only situation where it can be justified to answer 'no' to that question would be if the variables was never written to. Since you are writing to the variables at different places in your code snippet, you have to protect the data, i.e. you need the calls to ::EnterCriticalSection() and ::LeaveCriticalSection() at the places you were wondering about. I'm not sure what the "best" way is but IMO the OLD MDI interface is ugly and dated, unless you really need individual child frame windows that have built in support for cascading, arranging, etc. I personally would use non-dragable splitter bars (or similar) to divide a window into 3 sections, and each pane could be a window or a dialog, depending on the contents.
