I currently use it on a couple of Linux and Mac OS X machines to do maintenance on some VB6 stuff and it works really well. You'll find the experience much more enjoyable if you have a pile of RAM. My only warning is that not everything will work over USB. Most things do, the only thing I've tried that hasn't worked is a USB data acquisition board.
