The phrase "Drinking the Kool-Aid" is referring to a cult leader in the 1970's who convinced his followers to drink poison-laced grape kool aid. The writer is using the phrase "Drinking the Kool Aid" to say that he just did we he was told even though he knew it was very wrong.
