Everyone needs staples in their head. "VStudio Updates: Via social media Pin"bummer, feel for you. Fast forward 25 years: same damage if you brush against the door jam as you pass through. :(

Switchboard operators...Probably a huge influx of intellectual property lawyers suing for infringement. :) A new skill, now how to make 90 day wonder lawyers. GD&R

Switchboard operators...Quote:
When I grew up we were "fancy" with rotary phones.
Seems like phones with push buttons were sort of a "status symbol" because they charged more per month. That was back in the day when you used the telco's phone. I always thought the "2 piece" phone was neat. Base had the dial and microphone, and you held an ear piece up to your ear. Tried to buy one of the antique wooden wall mount boxes with the hand-crank a while back, in an estate auction. Too many other people wanted it. Back in the day, we did lot of farm auctions.

Switchboard operators...Remember them well. My wife's aunt was one. Had to learn a new skill. Pick up our first phone and the operator said "number please". Was a party line. No dial or keypad. I think our first phone number was something like 264. Anyone left ponders old enough to remember ads that said: "In New Jersey, dial Bigelow 8-1234"? How about the Acme Buggy Whip Company? If AI had been around back then, it would have said that the world would be knee deep in horse manure by now. :)

any experience on this SonicWall Z370 security appliance? Not that particular model. I have been using Sonicwall units for over 20 years. For many years, I used them with hardware vpn to vpn support with multiple clients. See what software features you are getting and for how long. Usually sold: hardware only, 1, 2, or 3 year licensing/support. Firmware updates usually require device to be update support wise. For a small office the 370 may be overkill. I am using a SOHO-W for my SOHO. Setup is not trivial (not for faint of heart) by any means but they do have good FAQ in support. If I could figure it out, anyone can. :) Next year, my unit goes off support, I am looking into the Z270 wireless.

Turns out training cats is very easy...No problem here. We have 6 cats. They are cut out from basswood and painted with acrylics. Don't intake/outake.

You can't have sh*t in Redmond anymore!seems to me that I can disable drives in BIOS (or whatever Dell calls it these days), under the heading "Drives". YMMV

What framework is this extraordinarily obnoxious "Legitimate Interest" cookie screen, and are there any browser add-ons that defeat them?Cookie screens can be attributed to the EU and their privacy laws. I set my browser to clear all cookies on exit, and just ignore the screen and/or click OK. I can create an exception if I want to. If it is objectionable, I follow OG's advice. Do the same for the "turn off your ad blocker" sites.

Another night in GeorgiaIndeed. Hope all is well at your home. I am down South, we dodged the bullet. Gotta feel for the folks up there who got the double whammy. On the positive side, our CERT team used Milton as a training exercise.

MiltonLucky to be South of it, getting 40+ MPH winds, no rain. I did put up the shutters. Tampa area still trying to recover from Helene. Kids got hit hard in NC, now back here for the winter just in time for this one. Luckly, they are South also. About 5 weeks ago, I contracted with a tree outfit to trim a couple of large trees. One from a lousy neighbor's tree that hangs over my yard, the other an oak that was approaching my roof. They showed up today, couple of the neighbors assumed that I had called them in because of Milton. Just a coincidence. Glad to have it done though.

The OG PC Programmer Teaches Real OOPQuote:
Yuk, a horrible mess of a language. Makes APL read like a Ladybird* book.
Used APL for some simulation stuff (way) back in the day. You can always tell an APL programmer... but not much. Lou

Ubuntu recovery option - opinions wanted.Like I said, this is probably not the best forum for that.

Ubuntu recovery option - opinions wanted.Well, since this forum is aimed at developers (mostly Windows), you would probably do better in the Ubuntu forums. I see this on one:
Quote:
What is the use of recovery mode options? There are a total of 8 options: resume: Resumes to the normal boot with the selected kernel. clean: As the name suggests, it is used to free up some storage space. dpkg: If you installed a package and due to some reason, it wasn't installed properly, or is broken and your system is malfunctioning, then, you can use this option. fsck: It will perform an intensive file check on your drives and attempt to solve if found any. grub: Update the grub config file. network: Activates the internet so you can perform all the operations like updating packages, or upgrading to a new version of Ubuntu, etc. root: Drops you in the root shell with all the privileges you would ever need to modify or troubleshoot the system. system-summary: Prints system information including partitions, RAM, network config, and more.
You can also use it for forgotten password. Personally, running debian, I use a live CD/USB when I screw things up. I also use a free imaging program to back my system up. Lou
