Do you trust the "Cloud"?For data storage? No way. For compute resources? Possibly. However I know of several occasions where groups blew through their budget with huge compute bills from using the cloud. Nobody monitoring the usage and BAM, $30K a month down the drain. Another blew through over $100K before realizing it. Could have had some nice hardware for that.

Loud KeyboardsLook at https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/[^] They have everything under the sun and their products are very good. Get the Cherry MX Silent Red Switches and you will have the feel of mechanical but very little noise.

It seems to me...I had a charge Friday against my business Amex that is very rarely used, however I did buy a laptop from Dell with it. Someone bought $1200 worth of thermostats from Lowes using my Amex number, my name and phone number, and apparently the 4 digit Amex security code from the card. I am blaming Dell, as I think they even stored the 4 digit security code and it was exposed in the hack. Got it all cancelled, and new Amex card on the way, cost me an hour of my precious time to deal with it. I have had my personal data exposed before, usually from govt databases, and their solution is to offer you 3 free years of Experian or some such. First step, give Experian all the sensitive that was just stolen. Ugh.

Kinda wish I knew more about "AI"I am curious as well, but even more curious about AI 'improvements' for hardware. Exactly what are those improvements and how can they be used? Can I use the arithmetic logic unit (ALU) and memory unit to increase performance for non-AI algorithms? Similar to you, I am just too busy with regular work to delve into it.

Email clientsI have been using emClient (free version) for years and am satisfied with it.

Christmas Trees Confuse MeYep. Around here I prefer subalpine fir as it has the best smell and shouldn't lose many needles

UtilizationI am pretty sure all RAM requires more energy to read/write than to just be powered up. Similar to a SSD or NVME drive

UtilizationRAM does not use the same power regardless of state. For example, see below at about the 8:35 mark for results We're modding a DDR5 Module and measure the Power Consumption - YouTube[^]

Uninterruptible power supplies - more complicated to buy than I'd likeMy experience is similar to yours. I have 4 APC 1500's and they perform flawlessly (knock on wood), while I have had poor experiences with CyberPower and Triplite. All of my APC's are at least three years old. I sold a Threadripper system a couple of months ago and tossed in an older APC unit (1350 I believe) that I had laying around. Too bad I could have sent the HCW for the cost of shipping.

Fighting a monsterI once had to dabble in a Fortran project with over 5000 files. It was mind boggling.

She stopped bleedingCongrats. And good luck! Contrary to what others have stated, I think the first few are the absolute best. Enjoy them!

Lights on your PC, love or hate them?Computers are not meant to be seen nor heard. Dark and silent. I do however like lighted keys on the keyboard. No RGB or anything, just like them lit. Regarding your worry on fans, just buy some Noctua fans as they are nearly silent and will last as long as your PC

Nail biter!I just built two new machines and everything is so easy today as long as things fit! However I always use tower or Mid-tower cases and they always go on the floor. I also prefer high air flow cases over tight enclosures, this was learned from building dual processor systems years ago. Dual Xeon systems would generate far too much heat for anything but high air flow. For the new systems I used a Corsair 7000d airflow and a Corsair 5000d airflow. Both cases a very nice and a pleasure to build in. I care little about looking at the stuff, but care more about cooling it all. Good luck with your new system! I hope everything fits and your build goes smoothly.

I debated a flat earther once. The scientific term is Platagaians. That is what I call all the PhD folks I deal with that ignore projections and coordinate systems. They all over the earth!

We're not all in the US: Annual rant about datesISO 8061 with offset from UTC FTW, time zone optional Actually, I find this thread hilarious bitching about US dates while recommending "Jul". Irony has no bounds.

Dog surgeryOur dog RJ had knee surgery and the accompanying cone of shame just before new years. Two months on the leash was hard, especially during winter. However she is as good as new now, we have been very pleased with the results. I hope Grizzly has the same results! Good luck to you and Grizzly!

Remember when KVMs used to work?I would get annoyed if the kvm switched all my monitors now, as I frequently have them displaying from two machines, but sometimes go with all three displaying from one. Worst part is if monitors have different ways to change inputs! So I usually buy three of the exact same thing. A good kvm would deal with all of this but the prices of a good kvm, and the issues of them not working well, has me sticking to my current setup. Until the kvm goes bad (which I dread) I will probably stick to this. I wish I could run 3 machines through a good kvm but I have room to spare so other machines get their own displays and input devices.

Remember when KVMs used to work?I gave up on KVM for video years ago, but still use KVM for keyboard and mouse. For video I just change the input on the monitor. Which is OK with only two systems (3 monitors) and I would say I generally have to hit the reset button on the KVM about once every couple of months, if that.
