Hi, I would recommend you to go for a dual core processors if you are planning to use your PC for multimedia purposes. Better Performace in 64 bit machines can be obtained by running 64 bit version of the software you are planning to use. Motherboard too plays a vital role in obtaining better performance. The interface through which it communicates with the processor ie FSB (front side bus) should be high. make sure your motherboard supports FSB frequency offered by the CPU (you can locate the FSB frequency on the processor box) that you choose.

Have you looked into SystemC? I have modeled some complex digital modules (PLL, ASK/FSK CDRs, etc) in C++ so I may be able to help.

Well, that's easy enough... Just turn every light and every other electric device ON inside your house and I'll bet the numbers on the meter will tick faster... Also, you can turn OFF every electric device in the house and the numbers will tick slower -- might even stop! How's that for control?

Probably not. It's most likely that you're limited by the upstream bandwidth of your connection to your ISP. Our upstream bandwidth is only about 400kbps on ADSL. Your mail server should support concurrent outgoing connections. Ours - Exchange Server 2003 SP2 - is currently set to a limit of 10 outbound connections total, and a limit of 10 connections per mail domain. I reduced these from the defaults - I think the default is 1000 outbound connections. I reduced the limits to ensure that the limited bandwidth was used more effectively, but it does mean that messages can be held up if a lot of large messages are sent (or a single large message is sent to multiple domains). Large messages are a problem generally. SMTP has no resume capability, so if the connection breaks, the server has to resend the message again from the beginning. This can cause a large message to 'stick' in the queues. Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder

As Steve has said, the DirectX SDK will allow this. It means that you work through standard interfaces to the card drivers. Look up TAPI as well. Elaine :rose: The tigress is here :-D

Don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but a Toshiba is always reliable. I wouldn't go for Dell, HP or Compaq. Best bets are Toshiba, Asus and Samsung, if you want a reliable pc, with Samsung probably your best bet for price. Can't tell you models exactly. P.S. Where are you based. Posted by The ANZAC

I know from experience that the 9550 is a DirectX 9.0 card, while the Ti4200 is only DX8.x. I upgraded from a Ti4800SE to a Radeon 9550 so I could try out Vista's Aero Glass interface, which isn't compatible with the GeForce 4 series. In terms of performance, simply try the two cards on some benchmarks such as 3DMark2001[^]. I suggest that version because it only requires DX8.1, not 9.0. Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder
