Has anyone ever had bruised ribs? I'm wondering if you have any suggestions for me. We got a new puppy last week and she wakes me up every morning around 4am to pick her up and take her out to relieve herself. The morning before yesterday I was carrying her down the stairs when I discovered the rawhide chewing bone our older dog had conveniently deposited there. Both feet shot straight out from under me, I landed flat on my back on the stairs, and tobogganed all the way to the bottom. I couldn't brace myself because my arms were full of puppy and I didn't want her to get hurt. As a result of this graceful manuever, I've bruised my ribs on the back left and sprained my left shoulder. The shoulder I can live with, but my ribs are killing me. Yesterday wasn't too bad until about bedtime when I started getting muscle spasms. Holy cow, I've never been in such agony! The spasms were excruciating this morning and I was popping Ibuprofin and aspirin all day, which seemed to help. And I put an icepack on under a back-support brace that I happened to have, which also seems to help a lot. The spasms have pretty much subsided for now, but if I twist the wrong way, I get an nice electifying seizure again. Has anyone had any experience with this? Should I go to the doctor (when my clinic opens after the holiday)? Is the Ibuprofin and the icepack sufficient, and I should just cope with the pain? Dave QRZ? de WAØTTN

There's not much they can do, even for hairline fractures. Good news is ribs tend to heal quickly. Get well soon :) xacc.ide-0.1.1 released! :) Download and screenshots

When I was young, I managed to crack/severely bruise most of the ribs on the front-right of my ribcage. It hurt like hell for about two weeks, but after that it wasn't so bad. The right side of my ribcage is still slightly deformed from the incident, but it's not like ribs can be set like an arm or leg... Anyway, definitely go see a doctor about it. It's important to ensure that there's nothing seriously injured by a potential bone break (e.g. pinched muscles or nerves, etc...) And definitely do not pop a bunch of painkillers for more than a few days. I know a few people that did serious damage to their livers by self-medicating with OTC pain killers for an extended period of time. -- Russell Morris "So, broccoli, mother says you're good for me... but I'm afraid I'm no good for you!" - Stewy

I agree with the others, if you have your ribs bruised they may be fractured. Even if there is no "play" in the ribs (a sure sign of a full break), if they were bruised there is also the possibility of a fracture, hairline or all the way through (just not out of place such that there is no play). Having had a fracture in my wrist ignored for 2 years, thinking it was just a "sprain" the bone had to get a bone graft as it was almost dead. They gave me only a 25% chance of recovering the bone and 75% of needing another operation to remove and replace it with a rubber bone. You do NOT want to wait that long. If there is a fracture the blood circulation may be interrupted, knowing that it is a real bruise vs. a fracture means you can treat it better (and check it later for healing) to prevent further complications associated with a fracture. Get the xrays, if it is just a bruise, you can take your ibuprofin and go about life. If it is a fracture, you will treat it pretty much the same, but you can follow up the visit with verification of healing to prevent further complication. I promise you, you do NOT want to ignore an unknown fracture until you need a bone graft. it is an extremely painful operation as you drill out a "core sample" from a healthy bone and insert it like a pin into the unhealthy bone. Thus now you have two injuries where there were one. ouch. Get the xrays, verify for your own benefit it is just a bruise and treat it accordingly with validation of current situation. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. True, but knowing that there is a fracture means you can follow up with verification of healing. With an unknown fracture there is the possibility of reinjury preventing healing, a follow up, even if it is only "knowledge" and in no way affects treatment means that you can prevent complications associated with reinjuring a fracture. In this case knowledge is very important as a preventative measure. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. Ouch! I feel your pain! I've encountered the same injury plyaing hockey at least 2x in the last year or two. Unfortunately I had a cold the last time it happened (just imagine snezing right now...). Not much doctors can do, except perscribe ibuprofin-type meds. Alternating ice/heat worked best for me. ~Mike Stanbrook

As mentioned below, this is not about therapy/treatment, but follow up. The treatment for fractured ribs (that are not out of place) is the same as bruised ribs. But knowing that the ribs are fractured means you can verify the healing of the bone later. You do NOT want to ignore a fracture until it becomes more serious. Admitedly, my case is odd since I have reduced pain sensation due to a childhood "accident" (depends on your definition of accident). Still it isn't the treatment of the break, it is the prevention of further complications associated with a fracture. It is extremely important that you know of a fracture and verify healing with a followup. With a bruise you go once, shrug knowing it isn't a break, and wait for the pain to end, but at least you know. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. Yes, you should go to the doctor. Under the circumstances you describe there is a good chance that you may have broken a rib or two, not just bruised them. Bruising doesn't usually cause that much pain except when you move wrongly, but you can survive that. A broken rib can migrate and puncture your lung - that can be quickly fatal. The spasms are worrying - they can drive your muscles to move broken bones into odd spots that can lead to unpleasant results. Please go have it checked out, if you can afford it - I know what it can be like to be so poor that a doctor is luxury. If you can't, be very careful, rest a lot, and avoid any sudden motions. Don't attempt any lifting, and try to rest as much as you can for a few weeks. But if you can, get a doc to look at it. This doesn't sound like a simple bruise... as many people have already said, YES - go to a doctor/clinic (you do have emergency clinics over there dont you) - at very least you need an xray and evaluation by a pro .. I came off a motor-bike many years ago and cracked 3 ribs (along with damaging an elbow and knee, anongst other things) - I spent a great deal of time in hell, even properly medicated it took a long time for the ribs to knit .. good luck 'g'

depends on how bad it is. You could have a hairline fracture of the rib. You need to have that looked at if possible. I tore the muscle off a couple of my ribs this summer swinging my driver at the golf course (I finished the round). :) anyway, it hurt like crazy for almost 2 months and I couldn't do anything athletic during that time. Getting ribs to heal is difficult because they are always moving when you breathe.

Go to the emergency room of your local hospital now! Don't wait for a clinic to open. Even if you didn't break a rib the lungs are very soft tissue that burse easily. If a blood clot forms and breaks loose you could have an blockage of a small blood vessel which can cause organs being supplied with blood to die. A stroke is an example of the kind of damage we are talking about. So, don't panic, but don't waste time going to the hospital. My hopes for a speedy recovery. I'm on-line therefore I am. Been there, done that. I was hit by a car when I was a kid. I spent ten days in the hospital and a month off of school. I don't remember much about the pain; I think they kept me whacked up on painkillers pretty well.

Dave QRZ? de WAØTTN

Thanks everyone for your advice. After another miserable night, I got up at 5am and called my clinic. Not only was there a 24 hour operator on duty, but she gave me instructions on where to go for emergency treatment. The doctor determined it was a contusion, and thankfully not a fracture. He loaded me up with a Vicodin prescription which I promptly filled at a 24 hour pharmacy. Got back home by 8:30 and am looking forward to spending the day in a haze. Thanks again, it wasn't so much that it was a serious medical concern as some of you were saying, but the pain was so tremendous that I knew I had to do something. I learned my lesson. When in doubt run, don't walk, to CodeProject for advice. Is there no problem Bob's followers can't handle? Bruised rib? Try broken ones, then you will know a living hell, can't sleep lying down, can't get in and out of a car, can't shift said car. I should have been so lucky as to have bruised ones. Just cope, you go to a doctor and who knows where it will all end.

A deep contusion or muscle sprain can be exceedingly painful, the point wasn't to scare you per se. It is extremely important to know it is just a bad bruise A) you know it will heal faster which will give you some hope during the pain B) you rule out further complications mentioned. In both cases you will sleep easier pain medication or not. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. Talk about things of tomorrow and the mice in the ceiling laugh. I agree. I didn't mean to sound like I didn't consider the recommendations for a medical assessment seriously. The muscle spasms were already telling me that X| But the advice to proceed with haste was what got me of my duff and into the ER. Now that I've got a pleasant vicodin buzz on, the pain has subsided considerably. I can still feel the twinges, but they are certainly much less severe. Without the nudge from the group, I would still be toughing it out. QRZ? de WAØTTN

You *really* need to see a doctor. They have drugs to help you sleep but it wouldn't surprise me to see them put you in a soft-brace to help support your back and ribs for you so they can heal. If they don't do that then just ask for a wheelbarrow full of pain killers. :)

Ouch, I fell snowboarding a few years ago and separated the cartilage-like joints at the end of a few ribs on the front right side. No bruise or fracture, just dislocated ribs. Couldn't hardly breathe and slept just a little at a time until I moved and pain woke me back up. Then three days into it I sneezed really hard, thought I was about to pass out from the pain and they popped back in and the pain went away instantly. Jim

I completely agree. In both my occurences, I spent the night in line at Emergency to get them checked out (and would suggest you do the same.). I was only suggesting that (as mentioned below) there is not much in the way of treatment for the rib area (i.e. can't be set, or put in a cast...) ~Mike Stanbrook
