Go to the emergency room of your local hospital now! Don't wait for a clinic to open. Even if you didn't break a rib the lungs are very soft tissue that burse easily. If a blood clot forms and breaks loose you could have an blockage of a small blood vessel which can cause organs being supplied with blood to die. A stroke is an example of the kind of damage we are talking about. So, don't panic, but don't waste time going to the hospital. My hopes for a speedy recovery. I'm on-line therefore I am. Yes, you should go to the doctor. Under the circumstances you describe there is a good chance that you may have broken a rib or two, not just bruised them. Bruising doesn't usually cause that much pain except when you move wrongly, but you can survive that. A broken rib can migrate and puncture your lung - that can be quickly fatal. The spasms are worrying - they can drive your muscles to move broken bones into odd spots that can lead to unpleasant results. Please go have it checked out, if you can afford it - I know what it can be like to be so poor that a doctor is luxury. If you can't, be very careful, rest a lot, and avoid any sudden motions. Don't attempt any lifting, and try to rest as much as you can for a few weeks. But if you can, get a doc to look at it. This doesn't sound like a simple bruise... Been there, done that. I was hit by a car when I was a kid. I spent ten days in the hospital and a month off of school. I don't remember much about the pain; I think they kept me whacked up on painkillers pretty well.

Has anyone ever had bruised ribs? I'm wondering if you have any suggestions for me. We got a new puppy last week and she wakes me up every morning around 4am to pick her up and take her out to relieve herself. The morning before yesterday I was carrying her down the stairs when I discovered the rawhide chewing bone our older dog had conveniently deposited there. Both feet shot straight out from under me, I landed flat on my back on the stairs, and tobogganed all the way to the bottom. I couldn't brace myself because my arms were full of puppy and I didn't want her to get hurt. As a result of this graceful manuever, I've bruised my ribs on the back left and sprained my left shoulder. The shoulder I can live with, but my ribs are killing me. Yesterday wasn't too bad until about bedtime when I started getting muscle spasms. Holy cow, I've never been in such agony! The spasms were excruciating this morning and I was popping Ibuprofin and aspirin all day, which seemed to help. And I put an icepack on under a back-support brace that I happened to have, which also seems to help a lot. The spasms have pretty much subsided for now, but if I twist the wrong way, I get an nice electifying seizure again. Has anyone had any experience with this? Should I go to the doctor (when my clinic opens after the holiday)? Is the Ibuprofin and the icepack sufficient, and I should just cope with the pain? Dave QRZ? de WAØTTN

Thanks everyone for your advice. After another miserable night, I got up at 5am and called my clinic. Not only was there a 24 hour operator on duty, but she gave me instructions on where to go for emergency treatment. The doctor determined it was a contusion, and thankfully not a fracture. He loaded me up with a Vicodin prescription which I promptly filled at a 24 hour pharmacy. Got back home by 8:30 and am looking forward to spending the day in a haze. Thanks again, it wasn't so much that it was a serious medical concern as some of you were saying, but the pain was so tremendous that I knew I had to do something. I learned my lesson. When in doubt run, don't walk, to CodeProject for advice. Is there no problem Bob's followers can't handle? Bruised rib? Try broken ones, then you will know a living hell, can't sleep lying down, can't get in and out of a car, can't shift said car. I should have been so lucky as to have bruised ones. Just cope, you go to a doctor and who knows where it will all end.

A deep contusion or muscle sprain can be exceedingly painful, the point wasn't to scare you per se. It is extremely important to know it is just a bad bruise A) you know it will heal faster which will give you some hope during the pain B) you rule out further complications mentioned. In both cases you will sleep easier pain medication or not. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. Talk about things of tomorrow and the mice in the ceiling laugh. I agree. I didn't mean to sound like I didn't consider the recommendations for a medical assessment seriously. The muscle spasms were already telling me that X| But the advice to proceed with haste was what got me of my duff and into the ER. Now that I've got a pleasant vicodin buzz on, the pain has subsided considerably. I can still feel the twinges, but they are certainly much less severe. Without the nudge from the group, I would still be toughing it out. QRZ? de WAØTTN

You *really* need to see a doctor. They have drugs to help you sleep but it wouldn't surprise me to see them put you in a soft-brace to help support your back and ribs for you so they can heal. If they don't do that then just ask for a wheelbarrow full of pain killers. :)

Ouch, I fell snowboarding a few years ago and separated the cartilage-like joints at the end of a few ribs on the front right side. No bruise or fracture, just dislocated ribs. Couldn't hardly breathe and slept just a little at a time until I moved and pain woke me back up. Then three days into it I sneezed really hard, thought I was about to pass out from the pain and they popped back in and the pain went away instantly. Jim

As mentioned below, this is not about therapy/treatment, but follow up. The treatment for fractured ribs (that are not out of place) is the same as bruised ribs. But knowing that the ribs are fractured means you can verify the healing of the bone later. You do NOT want to ignore a fracture until it becomes more serious. Admitedly, my case is odd since I have reduced pain sensation due to a childhood "accident" (depends on your definition of accident). Still it isn't the treatment of the break, it is the prevention of further complications associated with a fracture. It is extremely important that you know of a fracture and verify healing with a followup. With a bruise you go once, shrug knowing it isn't a break, and wait for the pain to end, but at least you know. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. I completely agree. In both my occurences, I spent the night in line at Emergency to get them checked out (and would suggest you do the same.). I was only suggesting that (as mentioned below) there is not much in the way of treatment for the rib area (i.e. can't be set, or put in a cast...) ~Mike Stanbrook
