I have DSL through SBC (AT&T). I have the 384 - 1500 Kbps download (128 - 384 Kbps upload) plan, and my throughput is at the 1500 Kbps because my house is about 200 feet from the CO. My plan is tied into my local and long distance land-line phone service. I pay $86 per month (which includes taxes) for the DSL as well as unlimited nationwide local and long distance calling. Just checked. Not on their network. Couldnt get the £9.99 but they could provide £19.99 for 1 meg through BT. Not any better than my current deal. Jon

Scenario here in our state (TN,India): UNLIMITED Deposit(initial Amount- refundable):1000 bandwidth : 64 Kbps (unshared) Limit : Unlimited Monthly charge : 551 rs. Mode : Cable-NIC. Deposit : 1000 Bandwidth : 128 (unshared) Limit : unlimited Monthy charge:993 rs. (modem rent 100rs included) Mode : ADSL Modem rate raises accordingly for 256kbps. LIMITED: *sucks* . Deposit : 1000 Bandwidth :128kbps Download allowed : 400KB Mode : Cable-NIC Monthly charge: 350 rs. *above 400KB billable. Bandwidth : 128kbps download allowed:1GB Mode : ADSL monthly charge: 700 rs. 1USD = 45Rs They are lot of other features and HIDDEN COSTS. *200 rs extra for static IP *Night Time only scheme. ie, you'll be able to access net only after 9.00pm and before 8.00 am * Shared/Unshared means, if your bandwidth'd be shared by the other local users of your area. *in limited scheme they say, at midnights its Free!. They confuse like anything. when you wanna select a particular scheme from a particular ISP, you'll need a month time to decide based on their confusing offers. Last year i took a 1GB conn.it was bit more expensive than this year. i had to pay around 1000 rs every month. with 9.00 to 8.00 free surf offer. after i moved on from my town, i cancelled that connection. now here in chennai i'm planning for a 64k unlimited.which's quite affordable.

You surely meant 400 MB? BSNL is much cheaper, 256 kbps (download) and a 0.4 GB limit for Rs. 250 ($5.5) and a 1 GB limit for Rs. 500 ($10) (BSNL Tariff[^]) Regards Senthil _____________________________ My Blog | My Articles | WinMacro

Same here. It relates to the sharing at the exchange i think. I am not sure how it works technically but that is pretty much the definition you get on the ISP's website. It doesnt seem to make much difference as my download speeds can be pretty fast. Jon

From what I understand, it's all to do with the number of other users who may be using the same line Whilst you may have a 2mb connection, in reality you have a share of a much wider connection. e.g. in a 50:1 you're sharing with 49 other users The actual total bandwidth available, however, won't necessarily be enough to cover all 50 users all downloading at 2mb at the same time, so at busy periods, there's a chance your connection will slow down If you're only sharing with 24 other people, you've got better chances at getting a full slice of the pie. -- Help me! oops! that's 400MB. BSNL is ok senthil, but few of colleagues complained about their(BSNL's) tactics in billing. 1GB for 500? thats cool, but you know with my past bitter experience, i'd always go for an Unlimited plan or a pre-paid plan where they can't play anything. BTW have you heared about Hathway ISP? actually i'm planning to take a connection this week. so if you find any attractive offers , please inform me.

iiNet. I've got a 48Gb limit and I needed the extra upload speed. A bunch of suburbs now have ADSL2 (8Mb) but they've told me there's no plans to upgrade my area yet. Grr. cheers, Chris Maunder
