Japan Vacation

Where are you headed in Japan? I spent a year there while in the Marine Corp. Mt Fuji was a nice area as well as some areas around Tokyo. Most of my time was on the island of Okinawa though.

at this point, we only know that we want to go to Tokyo, Kyoto and Mt Fuji. we don't have anything more specific than that. Cleek | Image Toolkits | Thumbnail maker

all that. at this point, any suggestions would be helpful - we can throw it all into our Bag Of Possibilities and then pick out things to stuff into our schedule when things start to solidify. we're thinking late spring sometime. Cleek | Image Toolkits | Thumbnail maker

My wife and I are also looking into taking a vacation in Japan. One of my co-workers is from Japan, and she highly recommends Kyoto. It used to be the capital way back when, and most of the gardens and architecture is still there. Very well maintained and supposed to be beautiful. Its also about an hour train ride from Tokyo, which is probably a must see. Osaka supposedly has some cool sights, but I haven't spent much time looking into it. We are probably going to spend most of our time in Kyoto. If you can, go around the beginning of April. That is when the cherry trees blossom and the locals make a big event out of it. Supposed to be breathtaking. Hope that helps.

Kyoto and vicinity is very beautiful. Lot's of old buildings and beautiful gardens. Although, it's not the place to buy the latest and the greatest hitech. So if you want to shop, I suggest you go to either Tokyo or Osaka.
When are you going there? I would suggest you go there in late august, or beginning of september. Less humidity and heat. :)

what we should see
Hiroshima. The peace museum usually leaves quite an impression, and if you go through the surrounding memorial park after visiting the museum, its beauty and the cheerful groups of japanese students might seem somewhat surreal. In addition to that, I found Hiroshima to be different from most other japanese cities in being more orderly and much less cluttered (at least that was my impression). Links: Wikipedia[^], Wikitravel[^] Should you visit Hiroshima, also go to Miyajima – it is a classic tourist destination, but if you take the "Mountain Path" to the top of Mt. Misen instead of the cable car or the direct road, you get a nice hike through a beautiful landscape. The area between the cable car's valley station and the town of Miyajima, around a small river, is also strikingly beautiful. Links: Wikipedia[^], Wikitravel[^], Wikipedia[^] If you go to Kyoto, you will surely visit sites like Nijo castle, the Golden Pavillon and Mt. Hiei; if you go a little bit to the east, to the shore of Lake Biwa and the city of Otsu (which, by itself, is principally like any other medium-sized japanese city), you should consider visiting Ishiyama temple; it is a rather large temple area with beautiful gardens. October was really great last year, in terms of weather. It was however an exceptional climate according to the locals. May is probably quite nice.
If you go to Kyoto, I also suggest you take an express train to Nara. Many beautiful sites and museums there. According to friends of mine, there's also a Ninja museum there, which might amuse you.
Make sure you try Ryoukan (Japanese style hotel) one night before deciding to stay at one for a longer period of time. Ryoukan means: squat over a hole in the ground when taking number 2, and sleeping on thin matresses on the floor.

Those are all on my list to go. If I ever go to Japan, forget high tech, you will find me at Mt Fuji or in one of the gardens or wandering between temples, etc. Not like I will ever go, but hey, you never know. If I ever get a new job, perhaps I will travel more. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. Talk about things of tomorrow and the mice in the ceiling laugh. I strongly suggest you wear flowered Hawaiian shirts and boxer shorts. Speak very loudly, preferably with a strong southern accent. You'll fit right in and become friends with everyone! I've been to Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka and recommend the first two. I didn't get out into the country side. Next time. I absolutely loved Japan, but it it is expensive and can be difficult to find your way around. The people are very friendly and helpfull though. The Soapbox is boring. I get way too much of that sort of political rah-rah from 'Pope F' down the hall from me (I call him Pope F because he pontificates a lot).
