Visual Studio "Live"

http://www.regdeveloper.co.uk/2006/01/11/visual_studio_live_feedback/[^] I don't know about the rest of you, but this would probably force me into another line of work. If MS does what I think it will do, the entire developer environment will be dished out from MS via web controls, and we'll eventually see a subscription-based pricing schedule where you have to pay for a yearly license to use their newest dev tools. And let's not forget the potential to implement hundreds of system exploits as well. What a crock of shit. ------- sig starts "I've heard some drivers saying, 'We're going too fast here...'. If you're not here to race, go the hell home - don't come here and grumble about going too fast. Why don't you tie a kerosene rag around your ankles so the ants won't climb up and eat your candy ass..." - Dale Earnhardt "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001

Next to me I have a Host developer (COBOL & OS/390). His "development studio" is "hosted" in the mainframe, and he uses a terminal emulator to edit his files and compile. In a few years, we will have our terminal emulator (MS Internet Exploder) and our "hosted" development environment (Visual Studio Live). This is awkward, and it sucks. -- Miguel A. Sounds like a lot of vaporware, marketdroid speak. I would suspect this is one of those things like "Windows DNA" that doesn't really go anywhere or affect anyone, other than tech news writers. ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Real Mentats use only 100% pure, unfooled around with Sapho Juice(tm)! SELECT * FROM User WHERE Clue > 0 0 rows returned Save an Orange - Use the VCF!

It wouldn't surprise me. Subscription based software is what they wanted to do w/ the release of .NET and web services, etc. The problem was the industry didn't want it. I seriously doubt MS has let completely go of the idea. Although, that's the good thing about competition. If MS does something everyone hates, someone else will step up to the plate and they'll loose market share. Then MS will either change or stay that way. Either way we win. No kidding though, if MS went this route, I'd write a friggin IDE for GCC (that didn't suck like the other ones out there) first, before we HAD to deal with their frequent buggy additions. More impetus to look at tools like #D and Mono. At some point, MS will dig themselves into a deep hole. Frankly, what corporation is going to trust someone else (especially MS) to securely (hahaha) and reliably manage their development efforts? And there are stil a heck of a lot of developers that don't have the bandwidth to make this feasible. Oh well. It's somebody's pet project that keeps getting funding. Marc Pensieve

Poor reporting in that article, but at least they linked to the actual blog post[^] Basically, he's asking what online ("live") features could be added to Visual Studio to make it better. That is a far cry from the assumption (probably made by everyone who read the news article without looking at the blog) that "Live" means a web-browser version of VS. (And yes, that would be completely awful.) John

That will be the day when I trust my source code transmitted, stored, compiled whatever over the internet...Fogettaboutit.
