Hi All, I'm writing some marketing text for a new hardware product and am looking for the best words to use to describe it (it's a programmable/configurable home-lighting system). In your opinion, to a non-geek, non-techie, perhaps slightly technophobic user, which word do you think is is less intimidating: configurable or programable All opinions welcomed! Many thanks, Sam W

Customizable. I know it's not one of your two choices, but I think it's less intimidating than the other two, yet gets the idea across.

I'd go with that because when you buy a car it is "customisable" and that sounds positively wonderful. Oh... I can upgrade and get the sat-nav with leather sports seats in my choice of colours and I can have it with silver paintwork. That'll show the guy down the street who's only got the basic model with plain red paint and nylon upholstery and just a tape player. I think configurable is the best description for such a system ,and people are more used to this word , for example the association with the computer at home with the configuration screen were they can configure the Monitor, Keyboard etc. With friendly regards, Eric Goedhart Skype: eric-goedhart Deep in the fundamental heart of mind and Universe there is a reason. -Slartibartfast

My technophobic co-workers like Gary Wheeler's suggestion; customizable as well. Makes it sound like it will work out of the box, but you can change it should the need arise.
