Advisory for Firefox Users

For a while, I've had problems with Firefox taking up exorbitant amounts of memory, and freeze-ups and slowness. When I upgraded to Firefox 1.5 (and therefore had to upgrade SessionSaver), Firefox's memory usage and freezing became intolerable. I disabled most of my extensions to find out what was wrong, but I didn't want to disable Sessionsaver because I depend on it. I tried changing all kinds of settings as well, all to no avail. I grew more and more frustrated and disgusted. I even tried creating a new profile, and of course, installed Sessionsaver on it. Still as bad as ever.
Finally, as a last resort, I tried disabling SessionSaver - and voila! my problems were gone! A quick search revealed that others have had the same problems with this plugin. Just say no to SessionSaver! TabMixPlus[^] will give you all SessionSaver features besides session import/export, and has a whole bunch of added tab functionality as well. :cool:

Is that something that comes with the default FF installation? I have never installed any additional plugins, but my FF still takes up tremendous amounts of memory. Rich

I upgrade to IE recently and was quite pleased by the change :-D

Nope, but FF 1.5 comes with some new in-memory caching features that use up much too much RAM by default. I recommend that people disable in-memory page caching or reduce the amount of memory allocated to it.

As in how much? Currently I have 25 windows/tabs open, all maximized, and Firefox is using 113MB of RAM (i.e. an average of 4.5MB for each window/tab). Minimize everything and the physical memory usage is just over 10MB. Not ideal but certainly quite liveable.

Type about:config in the address bar. I'm not sure which exact option he's referring to because there's so many of them. It sounds like this one. "My dog worries about the economy. Alpo is up to 99 cents a can. That's almost seven dollars in dog money" - Wacky humour found in a business magazine

Thanks, I'll try that out. I like FF so much I made it my default browser and use it almost exclusively, but something is seriously wrong here - the memory usage is tolerable (I have 1 GB RAM), but the CPU usage often hits 99%, 10-20 times a day, and then I have to kill it and bring it back. :| I really hope your idea works. Session Saver, i also cannot live without this, but before now i have had problems finding an updated and stable build. certainly i have never had any memory or CPU problems with firefox though *shrug* and i have been known to hit over 30 open tabs, on a couple of occasions WAY over 30 tabs :rolleyes: i shall check out TabMixPlus though, to see how it compaires. there are a couple of features i feel are missing in Session Saver, but i still consider it invaluable. zen is the art of being at one with the two'ness

I've had that many open in Opera before, and generally at least 15. In my case case a combination of the page icon and the fact taht the 1st 15ish are always open pages that I find easier to refresh as needed than to muddle through bookmarks for. 30 tabs generally means I've been slack at cleaning out pages I've opened for reading. My copy of O is set to restart with the same pages open on closing, so I can accumulate a decent ammount of junk easily enough. 1600x1200 with standard sized fonts also helps alot.
