Well, not yet, but three of us in the office are heading to Boston for TechEd in June. We are trying to come up with some places to visit while there. We've already decided to go to a Red Sox game and to hit up Cheers; does anyone have any other recommendations for us?

Nick, Cheers is overrated (imho), but may be fair game if you want to wet your whistle and happen to be in the area. June is a great time to visit Boston! Here are a few (strong!) recommendations:

      • Freedom Trail[^]
      • Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market & Haymarket[^]
      • Harbor islands tour[^]
      • Harvard Square (Cambridge)[^]

It is absolutely nothing like the show inside though. Just to warn you. They used the exterior only. It's across from Boston Commons, which is a nice place to wander around. Also, don't drive anywhere. You will be sorry. Take the T. Spend some minutes studying the subway map--it's overwhelming at first but it does make sense and is easy to use. You can get anywhere in the city for ~$1.25 (or whatever it's up to now--used to be $0.85). When you look at the map you will see a square of stops in the middle where the different lines meet... that is the destination of everything "inbound". If it is outbound, it is going away from that square of stops. That's an important tip that can get you lost if you don't know where you're going. I love the city (grew up in a burb), but my favorite place to go was always Harvard Square in Cambridge (it's on the Red Line). Tons of book stores (used & new) as well as music shops (again used & new). Great ambiance in the streets with the various street performers, and the panhandlers usually aren't too pushy, just don't make eye contact or you could end up talking to them for the rest of the day (which I've done). It's the single place I miss most about living out here in the midwest. I long for the days of sitting outside at Au Bon Pain reading The Lord of the Rings. Now you went and got me all nostalgic. Anyway, have fun. :)

:) The name remind's me of pub in Denver called the Bull & Bush. I bought a ball cap from there after several pints. It said "Bull & Bush" with a picture of two toddlers, a boy and a girl, each was looking down in their diapers, and the phrase "What's yours?" was underneath. cracked me up. BW

Yup. Been there, back when Cheers was current. The facade is all that's used by the show - the interior is entirely different, IIRC. It's located right near the Commons, I think (been a lot of years). "...a photo album is like Life, but flat and stuck to pages." - Shog9

Freedom Trail Quincy Market Houllihan's Jimbo's (cheap, delicious seafood on the fish wharf) Sturbridge Village, if you're a history nut and don't mind a short side trip. I'm sure I'll remember more before June. I spent a lot of time around there while developing Peacekeeper; love the place!:-D "...a photo album is like Life, but flat and stuck to pages." - Shog9

The Sunset Grill and Tap. Back in 99 when I was there they had 109 beers on tap and many more in bottles. I offered to forgo accomodation, sleep under a table and spend the hotel costs on beer. The company wouldn't have it. I think it's actually called the Bull & Finch Pub, but yeah, the show used a real place as a model. BW

Actually only the sign out front and the stairs leading down. Inside looks nothing like the show, which makes sense as it was in a studio.
