full moon pale visible on new moon
-
Yesterday evening, when I was driving home I looked at the moon. The phase of the moon was short after new moon. The small sickle was visible well. But also the rest of the moon was visible. Only pale, but visible. Can anyone explain me why the whole moon was visible. Where was the light coming from that was reflected by the moon? Thanks and greets Roland

Thanks to both of you! I thought about this, but was not sure if the earth reflects enought light. Greets Roland

It's called Earthshine.
On certain nights When the angles are right And the moon is a slender crescent It's circle shows In a ghostly glow Of earthly luminescence Earthshine A beacon in the night I can raise my eyes to Earthshine Earthshine A jewel out of reach Form a dream to rise to Earthshine ... Earthshine, lyrics by Neil Peart. BW
If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.
