    If you're going to poke fun at Microsoft, reserve a little scorn for our precious friends in GNU-Land I'm checking in a whole bunch of changes into CVS. I had recently modified the CVSROOT files for my project so that it sends out emails to a SourceForge mailing list when the change happens, and also updates to CIA - a project that tracks other projects cvs stats. While the CVS is puking out stuff to stdout, I see this gem:

    done
    Mailing vcf-cvs-development@lists.sourceforge.net...
    Generating notification message...
    Generating notification message... done.
    *** glibc detected *** free(): invalid pointer: 0x0027c07c ***

    Uh....WTF? Am I hosed? Did the commit fail? Partially? Where did this happen? On my machine? The server? Did I just crash the SF mail server? Who knows! God I love Unix based technology! ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Real Mentats use only 100% pure, unfooled around with Sapho Juice(tm)! SELECT * FROM User WHERE Clue > 0 0 rows returned Save an Orange - Use the VCF!

        How generous of you ;) I think it would be more like:

        Sending mail to recipients in 'My Email Notification' list
        Generating notification message...
        [Progress bar then goes from 0% to 100% five or six times]
        *** Error: Unspecified error

                Well as you'll notice at times sourceforge.net will go offline for updates and the error your getting might be with a new build of glibc they installed, so they will downgrade if it happens to a lot of users or apply the patch if available to address the problem. It is most likely a bug in the mailer or other tools. glibc has a feature for detecting corruption through the malloc_check variable. They seem to have it on 3 for generating the error and killing the program.

                  CVS is great - until people start using it! The biggest problem is odd bugs across different tools (and different versions of different tools). Avoid. The tigress is here :-D
