No more pagefile (modified)

On my new PC I have 2 GB of RAM. I tried to disable Windows' pagefile, and - surprise - the PC is *really* faster, especially when you have many applications running. VS05 seems to be also faster. EDIT: I always have many programs open (Outlook, Firefox, Explorer, Opera, MSDN Library, Visual Studio and some other utilities (I'm developing a web application) (nested brackets :rolleyes:)), and when I switch between them they are still alive, and they don't have to crunch the HDD for many seconds before turning to life again. I take it your running WinXP because on Win2K you can kill the OS by removing the page file. I've heard of it done by friends several times, occasionally something deletes pagefile.sys when the system crashes (or something like that) and Win2K will not boot whatever you try. Ed

How did you measure that? How much % faster? From the Churchdown Parish Magazine: "Would the Congregation please note that the bowl at the back of the Church, labelled 'For The Sick,' is for monetary donations only."

Ok, seems reasonable, but do you have any numbers? Someone may say that, by swapping out or freeing rarely used memory pages, there will be more space for caches (i.e., disk cache, font cache, network cache, application-specific cache, etc). After restarting, it seems to me that system startup was a little bit slower, but in VS 2005 the form designer opens up almost immediately!! I'll give it a try for the rest of today, and will report on it (from a totally empirical point of view)! :) -- LuisR

Good for you, I have Fedora ;P The only thing left for me is to get VS2005 running on Wine (which is possible it seems). I must say I had XP on my laptop when it came, put up with it for a couple of months and then wiped the disk (not just a format, a proper wipe :-D) and put Win2K on. Now got a seperate hd for the laptop which has Fedora, which is nice :) Ed
