I'm out numbered by quite a bit. I'm one of the few guys where there are more women than male programmers. Ist not bad though, and it keeps the sick jokes to a minimum. Welcome all the same. CP's a good place to be, and lots of smart people to learn things from. Giles
Giles wrote: I'm out numbered by quite a bit. I'm one of the few guys where there are more women than male programmers. same with me. Mine is a small company. The graphics team is all men. But the 4 programming teams [3 java and one win32 team] which together has 18 programmers boasts of 12 women :-) Nish

I was actually expecting Paul to be the first to jump up and start slapping some sense into the guys. ;) You're absolutely right, lauren. I've a (female) friend in Sydney who can out code almost any one I know (and probably beat the crap out of anyone I know as well, since she's a kick boxer) and it's odd that people think it strange that she is a programmer (just 'coz she's a girl) cheers, Chris Maunder
Chris Maunder wrote: was actually expecting Paul to be the first to jump up and start slapping some sense into the guys. yeah me too. He's even more of a woman-defender than you Chris ;-) Nish p.s. Chris, remember last time, when you and paul tried to admonish me and I blew up?

not to be taken the wrong way or anything but ... is it such a big deal to be a woman programmer who can actually write good code? kinda just get on with the job ... making a fuss about it is like admitting its a strange thing and kinda makes the guys in the industry think like they do ... ie programming is really a guy thing just my 2cents worth and all coding is coding is coding --- "every year we invent better idiot proof systems and every year they invent better idiots ... and the linux zealots still aren't being sterilized"
lauren wrote: is it such a big deal to be a woman programmer who can actually write good code? not really - but I never meet those in person. except one, they were pretty much mediocre, and I never found a girl to chat about custom interface marshaling. Of course there are quite some online, but you know - on the net you never know if it's a dog. I don't think "ladies are weaker programmers because they are ladies", but they just don't do (with a few exceptions). Germans could make chinese food and eat with sticks - but they don't do.

Heh. We're not even talking about her level of ability I don't think. Women are every bit as capable as men in this arena. However, most women smart enough to do this job usually pick a different vocation... usually one that's more creative or that centers more on intution than deduction or logic. That's not a crack on women. From my experience women just do better here in most cases. All this is is an example of men's hormones kicking in at the idea of a beautiful programmer. You would elicit the same response.:omg:

lauren wrote: is it such a big deal to be a woman programmer who can actually write good code? Perhaps some people do... but for me, Programming, Networking, Technician... etc. are not just a men's job... it's for all gender alike as long as you are capable of doing it and do the job well done... ;) :) :rose: Samantha:rose: :-O
Samantha wrote: , Programming, Networking, Technician... etc. are not just a men's job... it's for all gender alike as long as you are capable of doing it and do the job well done... Well said! The technical arts are great equalizers - completely gender-transparent. If you have the brains, and the interest, you're in good shape. I'm old enough to remember when women in technical jobs found innumerable barriers to advancement - even entry - in the professions. I don't see nearly as many problems today, and I hope that's reality, not just my wishful thinking.
