Neutering of the forum system

Hey - I couldn't think of a better word on this hot, sunny, soon to be :beer: refreshed afternoon First of all you guys rock. You guys rock like something big and rocky. Who else gets to write code for a system and have so many incredibly talented and creative people totally go to town on it and see what it can do. It's the ultimate form of flattery and I never, ever want you guys to stop. Changes to the forums: Unfortunately I did have to patch a few holes yesterday and while it was sad, it's also something that's been in my queue for, oh, 5 years now. Unfortunately I cannot allow any image or any piece of script to be injected into the site because the opportunities for malicious code (either through script or through GDI/WMF vulnerabilities) is something that's been giving me stomach acid for a long, long time. I don't want to have nasties doing unspeakable things to my computer and I'm sure you guys don't either. BTW: This has nothing to do with vote rigging on the messages. I kinda thought that was hilarious. But then again it's been a long week... The bottom line is that there was a security hole and I'm obligated to fix it. End of story. Almost. The only sensible thing to do in this situation is (a) fix the hole, and (b) provide you all with the functionality you want in a safer and more convenient way. This is what I'm working my butt off to do. I'm also working to integrate suggestions and comments and to shamelessly steal ideas developed by Shog and David Stone to put a little icing on top. They'll be the same ol' forums but with air-bags, ABS and extra cup-holders. OK, and maybe some go-fast stripes too. cheers, Chris Maunder

Okay, this puts it into a context that I can relate to.:cool: At first I thought we were just cutting off a feature because a public stunt and I think others did to.:confused: Seeing you state this though makes the whole situation easier to understand.:doh: David's post of earlier expressed a similar sentiment to what I was feeling.:mad: Now that I see the bigger scope for the change I'll put down the pitch-fork and tell the other peasants to go home and that we cannot burn the place down anymore.:sigh: They'll be disappointed of course. Nothing like a good torching to start the weekend off right :-> but they'll just have to go find something/someone else to burn :omg: as this now all makes more sense. Although if you're going to integrate it into the site, you need to replace our Midas only editor with something akin to FreeTextBox. Because the IE code for this stuff is so different from the Mozilla code for it.)

Oh, no tar and feathers here. With so much outsourcing to India why do you think we are peasants? We cannot afford tar or feathers. We did try to outsource the burning to Indian contractors but then we learned they were lying about their experience when it came to torching decent, honest websites. Once we learned of all the lies we decided we'd just have to do it on our own. I mean really if you want a torching done right you really should do it yourself I think.:rolleyes:
Overheard in clients: Question: "So country music doesn't make you want to get down and boogie?" Response: "No, it makes me want to clean off the bottom of my shoe." I just have to say that's about one of the best statements regarding country music I've ever heard. :cool:
